I would like a facility in File Manager to properly unmount a ext3 usb drive. (Similar to windows safely remove hardware). This will then windows (with suitable drivers) to directly access the drive without having to unmount the drive in Linux

The (better than excellent) MyStuff TAP on the Topfield 5800 PVR has a search function.
Simplification coming up...
Go to the EPG, find the programme you're interested in, press Slow and from then on any programme with the same name will have a timer set. A search can also be set up by hand to search for a particular word or phrase. If you enter 'BTCC', say, then any programme on any channel with 'BTCC' in the title and/or description will be recorded until the search is either disabled or deleted.
Massively powerful, massively useful and, so far, massively missed on the Humax box.
Thumbnails for photo storage would be very useful.
Its a bit bizarre that you get thumbnails for tv programs (which is totally pointless) and no thumbnails for photos.

By this I mean access to BBC iplayer on the box, maybe you are unaware that this is being worked on as a Freesat+ feature!
3. FTP support
Bit technical sorry, "FTP" is a means to transfer recordings via a network connection.

6. A choice of font/colour settings might offer us both a way forwards, on my 26" LCD its NOT comfortable reading, yes on my projector it looks ok. You surely can't think that white on grey enhances readbility !
11. (EPG doesn't tell you if you can watch a channel due to 2 recordings ongoing) I don't see any difference to the unreadble white on grey do you ? Yes there is a difference in the colouring when you press ok for a channel list but haven't noticed one on the EPG. Even the channel list colouring is not very noticeable - until I read about it I was unaware of the colouring. Another example of not taking enough account of readability through a clear colour/contrast difference.
Control over where a recording goes
I've created folders to sub divide my recordings into Films, Animations and Programmes. However, all my recordings still go into the general folder and have to be manually moved.
Some destination control would be nice.
Maybe a dialogue "Which folder do you want to record to?" with a list of the available folders which can then be selected by moving up / down the list and pressing OK.
Folder Intelligence?
I don't know if this is asking too much, but is there any way you can make the box continue to record to a folder if moved? I find eg with a series recording, the box creates a series folder in the general folder. if you move the series folder to any sub folders you've created before the entire series has finished, then all subsequent recordings are cancelled.
Could the box either not track the folder by name if moved or at least say the folder has been moved and ask you to locate it so as to enable subsequent recordings to succeed.

Just to add some balance, please can I say if there was a vote on these things, I would vote NO to both of these.
IMHO you have to strike a balance between ultimate flexibility and capability on the one hand, and simple "just press the button" useability on the other.
I want to be able to hit as few keys as possible to program recordings and do not want extra dialogue inserted (requiring more key depressions) to confirm where I want the recording to be saved.
You could say let's just have this as an option, that can be enabled or disabled in a setup menu. I don't want that either. I don't want the firmware to be unnecessarily complex with the corresponding increase in the number of bugs.

To me its a real pain having to manually move every recording by hand. I'm suggesting it be kept simply by automatically offering the possible folders by name with a simple press to select system. That way its only 1 extra button press.
However, having it as an option in the set up menus would keep everyone happy.

I personally don't think it will make the firmware anymore complex by offering a destination dialogue, after all its basically a Linux computer and record to dialogues are standard on OS's anyway.
Also, maybe you're one of the people who only records the odd programme and deletes a lot and so is quite happy for them all to go in a mixed up list.
As someone who's a heavy user - my hard drive is currently 87% full, I end up with a huge list that goes over several pages on a scroll down basis and is just randomly mixed if I don't use folders to create some kind of sense out of it all and reduce the recordings not only into catgeories but the length of each list by doing so.
Like I said, I see as having it as an option, the best way of keeping everyone happy and providing maximum functionality for both light and heavy users.
However, if you don't then its a case of agreeing to disagree.

Bearing in mind the Sky HD box is the Humax's biggest competitor, the capabilities it has are already *miles* better than that. With Sky, you have no folders at all and you can't sort by anything.
Does anyone have any idea when the next firmware release actually may be?
I'm mostly fine with things as they are with the big exception of not being able to delete files while something is recording so I REALLY hope this will be in the next update!!!

Some time ago bob_cat (Humax) was hoping it would make it out in Feb but only willing to commit to Easter - I'm guessing thats because there is a freesat iplayer go-live at around then (another poster reported as much from a Panasonic source).
I would like to be able to have the guide using the full screen. i.e. only lines of the channels, without the info box at the top. Now I can only see the first 7 channels in a row, whereas when using the Guide of my Sony TV (W4500), I can see the first 12 channels. Saves a bit of scrolling

It would be nice to be able to be able to parameterise (like "MyStuff" EPG on a Topfield) so people can vary the size of the font too for readability versus number of channels. I suspect the EPG is fairly locked down by freesat though, the screenshots of Metronic look sort of familiar do they not ? Except that the grey/white contrast is better because they didn't use a darker grey at the top and lighter in the table body like Humax unfortunately did.

Might depend on how easy it is to use. My idea was for idly flicking channels during an ad break while keeping the original channel as a PiP to see when the programme starts again. If this was not easy to do, I wouldn't bother.

Never watch a program live, record everything and start watching about a 3rd of the way through, that way you can skip the ads and finish at the same time the program actually finishes.

Only ever used this on a Hummy 9200 and a Topfield 5800 to force a tuner swap to check signal strength and quality for each tuner.
Very often PIP is just annoyingly implemented; on the Topfield, there's a TAP that provides a much more interesting way, called Surfer. You can tweak the size of the two pictures, and also browse the now/next info for other channels, as the PIP changes - so it's a lot more flexible for working out what's really happening on other channels.
With ordinary PIP, if you get an ad break in the pop up, that's pretty useless. Combining it with the EPG info makes it much more useful.

That's just what I do on my Topfield 5800. Also useful for catching up on not-to-important recordings during ad breaks!

I got fed up with the sixty odd quid per month with Sky, and the constant failed recordings due to power cuts, bad signal, etc, etc. I have been running the box for a few days now, and think it is fantastic.
Having read through the whole of this thread, there are a few items I would love to see; particularly the ability to record the contents of the buffer (much like Sky+), and an HTTP server on the ethernet port for guide access and recording instructions (I used to use Sky's remote record feature a lot too)
However, what I would really like to see is some work done on the Back and Exit buttons on the remote - in particular, the following scenario:
If I click the Play button, information about the buffer is displayed. If I press the Back button, the buffer display disappears, and a symbol apears top right indicating that this function is prohibited (or something like that). Pressing the Exit button removes the buffer display without showing the symbol. in the top right corner.
Now this is the bit that really grates me, and has on several occasions made me miss part of a program. If i press the 'i' button, the information plate appears (and remains there forever). Pressing 'i' twice more gets rid of it; pressing Exit gets rid of it. However, pressing Back (which is what I'm mainly used to doing) results in the box changing to the previously selected channel without any warning. As a result, the contents of the buffer on the original channel are lost, so if I've rewound or paused for any length of time, I miss a large chunk of the program.
It wouldn't be so bad if there was some warning when changing channel if you are not watching live TV. Although, I don't really see the point in the Back button going back to the last channel.
It also seems that certain functions will require the Back button, and certain functions will require the Exit button. I think these buttons need to do what they say:
Back - Go back a screen/menu/window/etc. Further presses will take you further back until you are back to TV.
Exit - Go straight back to TV.

I would like it to go to the last channel viewed if it is pressed while viewing a programme, ie when nothing else but a live programme is on screen.
