Thats a little misleading. Some customers have to pay it, some dont.

Don't most people flip networks when their contract runs out? I was with T-Mobile for 12 months and when the time came to upgrade, I was offered a couple of really basic Nokias for free with a charge of £50-100 for anything better. Going to another network as a new customer got me a far better bundled phone and a lower monthly charge.

As for the "current economic climate" guff, I'm finding that sticking £20 into savings each month, buying a sim-free mobile with the money once enough is in the bank and then choosing either PAYG or a SIM-only deal of my choice with no minimum term is far more cost effective. Sure, you have to wait a few months to get your phone, but I'm not an "I need it now" person!
