Why is Christine and Matt doing two Latin dances, tango and the salsa this saturday, while the others are doing one Ballroom and one Latin it don't make sense

Can someone please explain, because i thought it was one ballroom and one latin dance and not 2 latin or ballroom

I do know what you mean though bingoman. Tango is the least ballroom of the ballroom dances if that makes any sense but I was told it's the hold that means it's definitely ballroom not latin.

But the Tango hold is different to every other Ballroom dance where the "frame" is paramount and the same for each one.

By the same token the Argentine Tango is totally different again.

The Tango was initially a Latin dance and Jive was a ballroom dance, but they switched I believe.

Short thread, thank God. Need help. Anyone. PLEASE!! Downloading music and there's a song floating thru my head, something posted a couple of days ago about Jill and Darren dancing to the song better than the pros. I thought I knew the title, but oh no. It refused. I've tried every derivision, if that's even a word I'm so brain dead at the moment and in no mood to cope with the frowny faces from a post I did earlier, before the incredibly frustrating time loop thing that's lasted 2 hours because I'm just too damn stubborn to give in, especially when I know the damn song!!!!

Actually, the whole Latin / Ballroom thing is a massively artificial divide - samba and Paso are totally different, for example.

The general gist of it is 'in hold' = ballroom, 'out of hold' = Latin.

So AT, which is about as "in-hold" as it's possible to get with your clothes on, is ballroom then?

On the tour last year, Vincent and Louisa danced the AT in the ballroom round, so I guess so!

I can't see AT being classed as Latin really - it's clearly ballroom given the (admittedly rather silly) categorisations used. It's in hold and it's progressive. Case closed.

Argentine tango is sort of in-between really, that's why it fits nicely in the semi-final. It's certainly in hold for a large portion, but the hold is less formal / more flexible than the waltz/foxtrot hold, and the hold is broken when the couple does a lift.

In contrast, ballroom tango is definitely ballroom - the hold is maintained throughout the dance. Its character is very different from the other ballroom dances, so I guess that's where the confusion arises.

Yeah, but that's Tango Fantasia - no sane person in AT ever does a lift in social dancing, it'd mean letting go of your partner.

Actually, I wonder what (if any) judging criteria are used by the judges in the AT round? Obviously, none of them are qualified to judge it, but I wonder if they're given any guidelines?

Probably not - that'd involve actual research and work by the production team.

It's indeed an 'in-between'. It's in hold but they don't need to be in contact all the time like other ballroom numbers. It's more like a Spanish Smooth (with lifts like AS and out of hold moments), so yeah.
