Sony NWZ-S639f - 16GB Bargain

I had this delivered from play dot com yesterday for the bargain price of £87.99.

I have to say superb value for money - nice drag and drop features instead of that awful sonic stage, excellent sound quality, FM radio, superb video and excellent quality bundled earphones - I am very impressed.

The only thing that took me a while to figure out was getting videos transferred and playing on the walkman - spent most of the night with various pieces of conversion software experimenting, but have it sussed now.

dvdrhelp dot com had a good guide for converting video from various format for portable devices, and now i have a whole lot of divx's transferred to the device which play and look first class

yes i have lots of tips.

1) download the free software that they say to use on www.dvdrhelp.com. (cant remember what it's called off the top of my head - it's under the 'how to' section, how to convert divx, mpeg etc to portable devices)

2) At the back of the player's user guide, there are detailled specs for the type of MP4 file that the player uses - it need to be 320 x 240 res max, and 768kbps max bitrate. There is a template for MP4 in the software, but you'll still have to change the video resolution to 320 x 240 (or less if its widescreen - just change the first figure and the height will automatically propotion down as well. the is in one of the drop down menu - 2nd from left I think)

3) open the divx or other video file with the open button on the top of the screen. you can open a ripped dvd folder too, but this has to be selected by the file drop down menu instead.

4) this will take a couple of minutes to open in the software and a preview video will show in the software when complete.

5) press the save button and give it a file name in a folder that you are familiar with, and finally press the encode button. It takes about 20 mins for a 30 min length divx and you can batch tasks on multiple files to run overnight if you wish.

Also, if you install windows media player 11 supplied, you can download directly from bbc iPlayer, and sync onto the player through windows media player.

I hope this makes sense - any questions let me know or PM me.

Have downloaded a couple of thing from iPlayer and synced to the walkman, I can see it there on WMP11 but if I try to play them it say files are damaged and try downloading again, any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

h.264 uses far less space.

its a good player. but sony needs to get with the program, it lacks the small touches that make using such devices more convenient. you'll find out what i mean over time. things could have been done better with the interface.
