Wonder if anyone can give us some advise

I have a Sony 40W4500 and thinking about buying a
Sony DAV-IS50 DVD Home cinema System

Im just thinking in the future if I get Sky HD and maybe a blueray player or PS3, how would I connect it all up to get the full home cinema sound and picture from all the devices

Personally I would steer clear of the "all in one systems", I would be looking at a separate amp and speaker package.

The system you are considering will not playback Blurays HD audio formats, you are also buying a DVD player based system which there would be no need if you are seriously considering a PS3, this is more than capable of playing your DVD's, though region coding is an issue, a UK based machine will only play R2/region free discs.

For the money you are prepared to spend you could pick up a modest system that would give you DD/DTS and HD audio.

The Sony STRGD820 with Onkyo's SKSHT518 speaker package would set you back £420. The amp will offer you all surround sound formats and the speakers are very good value for the money, a member bought these not so long back and was very pleased with them.

In regards to connecting proposed devices to the above system - Sky HD/PS3 to the amp via HDMI then HDMI from the amp to the TV - Sky HD optical out to the amps optical in.

Sky HD optical out to the amps optical in.
Why not also connect the Sky's hdmi to the amp? I'm assuming it has sufficient hdmi inputs to begin with.

That way the amp can decode whatever digital audio is available, while forwarding the video signal to the TV via the amps hdmi output in exactly the same way it would for the PS3.

I think you'll find that's exactly what Deacon did suggest. The only reason he suggested connecting via optical also is because the Sky box does not deliver DD5.1 via HDMI.

Really??? That seems rather odd. What does it pass? Surely it is required to pass a full digital output to meet the HDMI/HDCP specifications?

Sky HD box via HDMI passes PCM stereo only. As you are expected to connect your Sky HD box to your TV using HDMI (and a lot of TVs do not interpret DD5.1 correctly) and to your amp using optical (or coaxial with some newer Sky HD boxes).
