10 minutes should do it, and then put the eggs into cold water straight away and leave to cool down.

When cold, tap both ends of the egg on a chopping board and then roll the egg under the palm of your hand, to crack it all over. The shell should then come away easily

I would have thought your best bet would be to go all out and purchase several eggs then cook then for varying times and then decide which was to your liking.

Obviously, remember to record the results for future egg boiling.

for hard boiled I just put them in a pan of water and boil the b*llocks off them, well, about 10 minutes. Don't ask me for a soft boiled egg though, I can never get it right, either ends up hard bolied or 'snotty', I'm a good cook generally, but it's the simple things that stump me, I used to be rubbish at boiling rice too.

I have one of those red egg shaped gadgets that you put in the water with the eggs and then as they cook, a line develops around the red gadget (soft/medium/hard) and you remove the eggs when they are cooked to your liking. It's never failed me yet. I got mine from Lakeland and it takes the guess work out of boiling eggs.
