ipod - itunes newbie

Can someone guide me here.

We have an ipod touch now and wife has itunes on her laptop.

I have most of my mp3s on my desktop.

Right what I done was stuck some mp3 albums on to my flashdrive and took that over to laptop.

plugged ipod touch in. itunes opens and around the middle of the menu it shows her ipod and it's folders.

I open the flash drive and drag the folders to the "music" bit of her ipod section and it transfers over.

fine so far,

However when I go to the top menu of itunes and click get album art it basically finds nothing in the library.

I sort of understand why, so how and where do I transfer stuff from the flash drive so it goes to the library 1st ??? Do I just drop them into the itunes music folder ?? or will this not get us album art anyway ??

I'm a bit lost with this and feel I shouldnt be.

EDIT: to add to this, to fix the 4 or so albums on it just now will I need to remove them the readd them to this library before uploading again to the ipod or is there anything I can do on the ipod to fix them ?

I think you need to first of all import them from the flash drive into the itunes library, Itunes will then convert them into AAC format (or whatever its called).

You then need to create a playlist for the ipod (we have 4 ipods in our house so one for each ipod). Then you add the music fron the library onto the playlist.

Hope this helps, I've had itunes for a year and use it okay, but my explanation may be a bit naff.

You don't need, or want, to convert them to AAC.

All that will do is lose a bit of quality in the files.

Unless they are protected MP3's that you've bought elsewhere, iPods are perfectly capable of playing MP3.

So when I rip a CD into itunes, can I skip the bit that asks me to convert to AAC?.

I'll give that a go when I put some more music onto my Touch

Absolute tosh from start to finish there.

What you can do is add them to your Library then sync them with your iPod, or just drag them onto the iPod, meaning no space is taken up on your computer.

bit of everything really. believe it or not I a getting somewhere now and have acquired covers too.

thanks for all the help, you made me look deeper into it and think I more or less have it.

I have another question though.

when you highlight the ipod in itunes it shows you what space is taken up by what but I have a red area saying "other" any idea what this is ??

I thought I could look at "my computer" and see it as a drive but it doesnt seem to show up as one.

I'm probably not the best person to help as you can see from the replies to my first response.

I have "muddled" through and got 4 ipods onto iTunes with cover flow working and separate play lists. Whether my method is the best and most space efficient, god knows .

I'm sure one of the "experts" will be along soon to help you out.

I have 130MB taken up by 'Other' on my touch. All it is is the Operating System files, nothing to worry about.

Ok, next problem...related with album art again.

I have attempted to use the "get info" by selecting all the tracks of an album then giving it a picture. trouble is for some reason its given almost every album now the same bloomin picture and cant get them to change.

getting frustrated by this

I had put a version of wall-e on the ipod but it was wrong format and doesnt show up. however on the top of itunes when I click on my ipod then on the top movies it lists it i there with a blue dot next to it. Seems it is on the ipod somewhere.

How can I access the ipod purely as an external drive so I can browse it and hopefully remove this (if it is there) I'm fairly sure this is the "other" thing

as has already been mentioned, "other" is the operating system.

ipod touch doesn't have a disk mode.

yeah I see that. Why is it listing that movie from that page though and I have no access to delete/view or anything with it ??

and yeah I've since read about no disk mode, apparently same for iphone, although it has a work around apparently.

to be honest its this whole album art that is bugging me.

Ok, think I've got the album artwork sussed.

What would happen was that I'd highlight an album on the ipod , do get info and tell it the new pic. This would then update BUT I'd then go into the actual ipod and find all or most of the albums ALL had the same cover.

Even though I was only highlighting those and tracks and it looked like only the id tag of those songs updated I should add.

However I noticed the little ticks on the left side of all the tracks are always highlighted.
so now I have done a select all then do a uncheck selection. then highlight the required albums tracks and do a check selection. Now when I get info and update the album art its only affecting the proper album.

So to sum up. Probably stupid of me but works like this anyway. I just presumed as I had only highlighted those tracks and that it only showed it was updating the id of those tracks that it would work....seems not though.

Sorry, one more question (for now)

All these problems I was having was using my wife's laptop (vista premium) but I've now moved the whole lot over and using my own desktop computer for it (win XP) and it's a million times better. no problems with artwork and everything works as I imagine it should.

Is this a known issue with Vista or just our laptop ??

My desktop uses XP and my new laptop uses Vista. I have never had more problems with a PC than I do with my Vista laptop and I used to build all my computers. Vista is junk, over all.♠
