10/10 for the judges tomight. They knew Christine going through at the expense of any of the others would have been ridiculous and Lisa was the most vulnerable. Probably the only chance Lisa had got was to win the judges vote.

i find the scoring by the judges very erratic this series and think there is a certain amount of pre conceived ideas as to the score they will give from the training footage.

Rachel and Vincent's waltz was far too fast. A modern waltz (or English waltz as it may be referred) should be around 29 bpm ang be in 3/4 timing. That was so fast it was almost 6/8 timing which is totally wrong.

The element of the waltz which makes a good waltz so difficult is the slow tempo and therefore the control it requires. To use such fast music to me is almost cheating as they are not having to apply the technique of control that the other couples using the correct tempo are.
It's really difficult to make a waltz at the correct tempo not look "ploddy" (if that's a word) and takes a much higher level of drive and knee /ankle technique.
I think Rachel and Vincent make a sneaky move tonight and got away with not having to apply that technique and control and I'm really annoyed at professional judges not picking them up on it and marking accordingly.

There, rant over. Apologies but it's been winding me up all night!”

Your theory falls down at stage one - the dancers don't pick the music - the dance is fitted to the music by the pro as I understand it.........

It is danced to live Music. The tempo can be adapted and the pro dancer should ensure that it is danced to the correct tempo. It's not exactly rocket science!

Un the competitive danceworld many different songs are used and danced to live music and tempos are adapted accordingly. It is usual and standard practice.

Also, I don't know if this has changed but certainly 2 seasons ago the pros chose their own music. I know this as one of them told me directly.

I've been meaning to post a review but got distracted by other things, and now the X Factor result show is are about to start so I've cut and pasted this from the MM&AA thread:

Strange show tonight. Lots of overmarking, but we expected that.

I like Lisa but I thought both her dances were overmarked. I did cheer at home though as she needs a break and I hope she avoids the dance off. I liked her chacha and her foxtrot was lovely - I just wouldn't have marked them as high as they did.

Poor Tom - his waltz deserved the same scores as Rachel. I hope he avoids the dance off too; this is the first test of his popularity. I enjoyed his samba but coming after Austin's paso didn't help!

I enjoyed Austin's paso; the most enjoyable dance of the night. I agree with Len though, it lacked paso content but I still thought it was great. Definitely his best dance.

Rachel's waltz was OK but not better than Tom's. Her paso was so-so and I'm glad the judges marked it properly.

Christine's salsa was better than her tango which I didn't like at all. I don't think she's going to escape the dance off - she's lovely but surely even her most ardent fans can see it's not the judges undermarking her and overmarking others - she just isn't as good as the other 4. Matthew is so supportive though - it must be really hard for him especially after last year.

Prediction: Christine and Rachel in the bottom 2, Christine out.

I can't be bothered to vote - sorry Lisa and Tom. Over to ITV to see what Alexandra, Diana and co do with Britney's songbook. I predict an exit for JLS...

I thought tonights show was gripping and its a shame this series has been overshadowed somewhat by the JS fiasco. All the competitors are giving it their all and the standard is brilliant.

Im taken with both Christine and Racheal - both seem naturally nice with that little bit of shy reserve which seems to get rarer by the year.

That's not saying much considering how woeful they've all been. I thought it was a bit poor myself and (I would say I'll get slated by Vincent's fans but I don't think some of them like me anyway) the bit he did at the beginning smacked of desperation tactics - yes it was impressive but surely the whole point of the dance is to show of the celeb we all know the pros are brilliant dancers that's why they're the pros and thought Matt's bit at the start of him and Christine's AS routine feel into a similar trap which is weird because he's usually good at showing off his celeb. For all his faults every time Brendan's done a flashy bit he gives Lisa a flashy bit to echo so she has the chance to look good too.

I was just assessing the situation facing the judges. Form your own opinions as to whether Lisa should have been top. Obviously, it will be interesting to see what happens next week if Lisa and Rachel perform to a similar standard. It would not surprise me if they are falling over themselves to praise Rachel irrespective of performance. In my opinion it was the over-rating of her post dance-off performances which has led to 10's being given out like confetti.

Personally, I think Tom has been consistently the best over the two disciplines throughout the series and would be a deserved winner and I would be happy with Lisa as runner up. I believe Austin looks very awkward doing anything other than ballroom.

i liked the show unliek everyone else i think austins paso was overmarkled he was jsut stomping about but not enough content

tom was undermarked when will they give him the 10 he deserves? hes in real troubl if people dont vote/didnt i do hope he gwts through he deserves it

i loved rachels waltz and the paso was ok vincent was outstanding

christine is ok but is now being shown up by the others as not good enough

and i was pleasantly surprised by lisa though brendans chereography was great

This has been bugging me all day.

But why did they change the lighting effects on the screens to green for Austin & Erins Paso? and not alter them for any of the other couples? I've seen them alternate from blues to pinks for all the couples, but nothing so dramatic as last nights green flames. I feel that was slightly biased to be honest. Does make me wonder what the reasoning behind it was. I can't recall any of the other couples having dramatic lighting effects for their paso dances.

Can anyone else confirm that other couples have or have not had lighting effect changes, or am I going round the pipe?

I can't say for sure about all couples, but for a couple of examples:

Camilla and James Paso doble - James started off in a solo spotlight.

Camilla and Gethin AT - if memory serves, they had a spotlight or two on them for the dance, with the surrounding stage dark.

I think Austin and Erin had, erm, interesting lighting for last week's cha cha IIRC.

Pro dance wise, I recall one I think from S4 that had the women coming in one males' shoulders with blue scarves that had funky lighting.

Those are just a few I particularly remember for some reason. I assume it's a combination of what goes with the music, whether the pro asks for special lighting, and how much special lighting is going on in any one show. There have quite probably been other incidences of it this season but at the moment I'm having trouble remembering dances from one week to the next so don't trust my memory.

Personally I find it detracts as often as it helps (Austin's cha cha a case in point)
