So, if we dropped Cameron from a plane I would be happy ... and look, I've been on topic too !!

What's "great entertainment value"? Kate vomiting and Jade clearing it up? Jonny's drunken misogyny? Whether you like it or not the one of the most important ingredients for a successful and entertaining BB, is confrontation. It doesn't suit everybody's taste but for the majority of viewers it's what gets their juices flowing. |

Double eviction - split vote. "More discerning viewers" - don't make me laugh. You mean, those who preferred the Club 18-30 hellhole that was the BB3 house with everything heavily signposted for viewers with the intelligence of an amoeba and the attention span of a goldfish. Very discerning - not. Quote:
Whether you like it or not the one of the most important ingredients for a successful and entertaining BB, is confrontation. Never denied this. The round table exposure of Nick is probably the single best BB moment ever. However, it is a matter of balance. It doesn't suit everybody's taste but for the majority of viewers it's what gets their juices flowing. BB3, OTOH, offered precious little but endless boozing, bitching and belligerence and sadly pandered to people's base instincts. Its popularity is a thoroughly depressing indictment on British culture, British TV and British people. TV can trigger off a variety of emotional responses from the viewer without being lowest common denominator trash. |

On the contrary, I've noticed you posting some incredibly crass comments to this forum, seemingly with the sole intention of winding others up e.g. your asinine contributions to the "Hello Jon" thread. You're the one taking this personally - I'm not. Quote:

That's because what you have posted is utter crap with no basis in fact. The fact that you are now reduced to a tirade against me personally only underscores the weakness of your argument. Oh, and Jon isn't even my favourite housemate. For the record, it's Anna (BB1) and I have no problem with people disliking either of them as long as they have a well thought-out, well presented opinion backed up with evidence from the programme that stands up to scrutiny. It's not my fault that any argument against both Jon and Anna's conduct in the house falls to pieces upon examination. That's because they're both good people. Quote:

That's exactly how BB works though - by appealing to instincts we might not otherwise admit to - but as I've argued, there are limits. BB3 was throwaway TV with none of the substance and presence of thought showcased alongside the voyeurism - particularly in BB1 - and I do think that those who simply view BB through the perspective of "light entertainment" and nothing else are guilty of a certain ignorance, yes. I never claimed to be - and neither are you.

But I would also accept that those who think in that way would point at me and call me a saddo. So be it! I'll not lose any sleep over it.BB also had a more serious dimension to it as a psychological investigation of how people react under very specific conditions. BB3 however jettisoned everything that was ever good about the previous two series and was tasteless trash akin to watching a car crash. If you can honestly say that you enjoyed the "spectacle" of stupid Jade being comprehensively ridiculed by both housemates and producers, Sophie reduced to tears by being bullied and bitched about, PJ's BJ, Jonny and Alex drunkenly stripping both Kate and Jade, then frankly I pity you. BB is all about voyeurism, but BB3 proved that there are limits. I thought that BB1 started with the intent to conduct a psychological investigation but it quickly became apparent that a lot more money can be made from the spectacle that is a dozen members of the public thrown together in a house and made to perform to order. BB2 gave the impression that it was sticking to the original ideal of the show but I think that the money-hungry execs had already sunk their teeth in to the project. It was never going to be as interesting (I do not say as good) as the original show. It was like paying homage to it's beginnings as a social experiment then heading firmly, from the edge, into the centre of light entertainment. Was it a good thing? BB3 was the answer. A bunch of people who seemed to have been selected with a view to entertaining the public. You had 'Alpha males' (apparently) and good looking ladies, 'straight-laced' to be picked on and ridiculed, and the 'characters' that were Jade, Sandy and Alison. I watched because I wanted it to be as good as the first time. But it wasn't. With BB4 they publicised that they wanted to go for more 'normal' people. I won't go there as I feel we've done it to death on this forum. Sufficed to say it was like watching a favourite family pet dying slowly and painfully. Don't get me wrong, I have watched all 4 series now but with less and less aplomb as the series have gone on... and on... and on. They've got BB5 and then if that doesn't work they should call it a day. But they won't. Money talks. On the contrary, I've noticed you posting some incredibly crass comments to this forum, seemingly with the sole intention of winding others up e.g. your asinine contributions to the "Hello Jon" thread. The fact that you are now reduced to a tirade against me personally only underscores the weakness of your argument. I have found that fact is subjective (!) in this forum. As it is in most forums. But having frequented a nember of forums I know where I'd rather get picked on! It isn't you that is being targeted though, it's your opinion. But reacting by attacking back isn't going to help the situation. If you feel that you have received a personal attack then hit the Alert button and walk away. IMO you're being a bit touchy... ![]() Oh, and Jon isn't even my favourite housemate. Some people were then saying to be patient with Jon.............he had a cunning plan...........................so cunning in fact that before we knew it the show was over and nothing had happened, well nothing of any great entertainment value. Can't blame Jon for what other people's unrealistic expectations are. So the housemates left in there were boring as fu*k. So put Jon in there. The other housemates are still boring as fu*k. So it's all Jon's fault. Blame Jon. Jon went in there in the hope that he could wind them up a bit. Unfortunately on Jon's release we found out that he was told not to tease the other housemates. His hands are kind of tied really,..what would you have him do? There's no way on earth that if Jon wasn't put back in, that these dull housemates would suddenly come to life and start entertaining us. You can't blame Jon for the other housemates not being entertaining enough,..that's their fault not his. They tried every other gimmick in the book,..what makes anybody think that Jon can get a pulse out of these non-entities,.when every thing else failed? They shouldn't have even got into the situation where they felt that they had to put Jon back in there in the first place. If you weren't that keen on Jon,.then him going back in wouldn't have made much diference. If you did like Jon,..he was still entertaining, despite the others not being. Seeing Ray torture himself, after Jon told him some bullshit about the person voting Nush, cannot win,..Jon sneaking away, and we see Ray saying "Fu*k,.Fu*k" pacing up and down rubbing his face and bald head was really funny. "Oh,..I can't be nominated, by the way,...Did I forget to tell you that?" Was hilarious. Jon as a drunk dressed like Frank Sinatra was quite funny. There was still plenty of entertainment left in him,....and if he wasn't in there,...what do you think you would have got? You can hardly blame one person for BB4 being so crap. A person who had quite a personality stands out from the rest,..but for some reason people want to blame that one person for the faults of all the other housemates. How does that work then? If BB4 were in such a desperate position that they had to put a housemate back in,..does that not tell you something about those that were left in there? It's a bit much to put the onus on Jon to carry all the other housemates. If BB4 was so crap, maybe the finger of blame should be pointed at the housemates that made it boring,...not on the housemates who were the only ones who gave it a slight lift. It's hardly Jon's responsibility to make the other housemates entertaining. If they are boring,..they are boring, maybe nothing could have brought these cardboard cutouts to life. Putting Jon back in there was like expecting him to save a sinking ship all on his own. Steph, Scott, Cameron...you're all boring,..but don't worry about it, it's not your fault,....it's all Jon's fault. |

The other HMs (not Jon) were so bland boring or pretend and Endemall desparate with their bomb hoax gimmicks etc they sort of buggered up their own chance to rescue the show. When Jon was voted back in they should have allowed Jon to really wind them up, especially Camoron, (he did a good number on Ray), but I was soooo waiting for him to lay into Camoron, yet Endemall wouldn't let him (hmm wonder why?) yet wasn't it brilliant watching him go back in, especially the expressions on the faces of the other HMs!!!! So Jon won it twice, didn't he? |

Yes, best BB moments indeed!!
When Jon came out he got the best reception. He got the best reception going in again! Remember anyone else's eviction with that kind of support? So good, they put him in twice!

*rubs chin and nods* mm you have a point there maisy, so global warming is Jon's fault after all, tut tut.
Surely then it also means that it's Jon's fault Tony Blair has an irregular heartbeat, and it's Jon's fault scotland lost to france in the rugby today. Last edited by grimfandango : 25-10-2003 at 21:16. |
