What's the point of technique?

If you watch Len judging the show in America he is very fond of extolling the virtues of entertainment. He also said blatantly more than once last night that he was going to overlook errors and omissions because he enjoyed certain dances so much. I have just watched Austin and Erin again, and whether it was technically perfect or not, IMHO as a piece of dance entertainment, it was MEGA. If Len can overlook technical issues, then so can I.

It was indeed. The point is that Erin isnt a Latin dancer. She doesnt know how to choreograph Latin and it was her fault that the dance lacked any paso content, her part of the dance was pretty awful as well. Len did comment on the fact that she hadnt put any paso steps in it.

Lots of stomping but little else. Len had that mark right.

Len is bonkers this series, the paso did have content (otherwise, neither Arlene nor Craig would have given it a 10), technique was excellent (look at the body position and footwork) and with the amazing performance that made it a 10. It was one of the very few "wow" dances we had this series!!!
Of course, then people are OK when Len dishes 10s to really flawed dances (like, in ballroom, major gapping and complete lack of heel turns), provided the 10 goes to their favourite couple...”

Craig marks on performance and the technique that's there. He doesn't mark on missing technique, I don't think he ever has, really.

We all know that Arlene has a soft spot for Austin, and like Craig often goes for the performance and the technique that's there rather than pointing out what's missing.

So Craig's and Arlene's mark don't really show that the Paso was a full Paso. I admit it was a 'wow' dance - but a Paso Doble it was not.

But the subsequent marking has led me to ask what's the point of any choreographer/pro adding technique into the dance anymore, as it doesn't seem as though (minus Len) the judges bother with it?

Craig does mark on missing technique and always comments on it; and, just to stay on the same SCD episode and couple, he did so for Austin's foxtrot.
Arlene hardly has a soft spot for Austin - just look at how much criticism she gave about his arms, and if you look at her marks she gave worse dancers higher marks quite often (who did she give 10s to first, for instance?).
As other posters have added, there was Paso content; of course was not full, but then no dance it is since there's only that much you can put in it for a non-pro. If you go for the "full" then I don't think any of the SCD dances ever are.
