When you open a bottle of whisky/vodka/pernod etc, do they go off or can you keep them for a long time?
If so how long

They should be fine. I have never known a spirit to go off. Archers can taste a bit funny if old though. Thing to do is take a small sip of it. If it tastes fine, it will be fine.

I make a big batch of frozen cocktails to keep in freezer if I need to use up old spirits, especially little bits from lots of different bottles of different things!

Wine, of course, can be oxidised to acetic acid (which is how wine vinegar is made). Spirits contain enough alcohol to kill off most living things.

After his death at Trafalgar, Nelson's body was supposedly preserved in a barrel of rum so that it could be brought back home.

An opened bottle of spirits never has time to go off in my house

Similar question, though not spirits.

I have had a bottle of Baileys in the cupboard for about 3 years now unopened. I've looked for a use by date and can't find one.

Do I need to pour this down the sink, or is it likely to be drinkable still does anyone know?

Same, just have a sip if it tastes fine it will be fine.

Someone else asked that question a few weeks ago. Give it a very good shake first though.

Interesting!

Nineteen of the enemy had been sunk or captured; not a single British ship was lost. HMS VICTORY put into Gibraltar for repairs where legend has it that Nelson's body was placed in a large cask of Pusser's Rum to preserve it for the long voyage back to England. Upon arrival, the cask was opened and Nelson's preserved body removed. But the rum was almost gone. The jack tars (sailors) had drilled a small hole at the base of the cask through which they drained most of the rum, thereby drinking of Nelson's Blood. Since then, the term Nelson's Blood has become synonymous with Pusser's Rum.
Hmmm... drinking rum having had a dead body soaking in it.. bleugh!

It should be fine if unopened. However, when opened Baileys should Ideally be kept in the fridge (though I never do) owing to the cream.

I've been asking loads of people, and nobody has any ideas, although you would think if they had a sell by date they would put it on it

Would it not be the law if the booze could go off or give you a tummy ache or something

ice_cool, think about it - do people drink vintage wine or brandy? Does it increase in value and taste as the years progress..? Does a 100 year bottle of wine or spirits get poured down the sink, or sold at auction for rather a lot of wonga...

Something that is 40% proof is not going to go off even if it has been opened! Goodness sake...

I personally have never had a bottle of spirit (or a bottle of anything alcoholic) that would have a chance to go off

If the bottle has been open for quite a while the alcohol content starts to evaporate. This could take years tho.

I would imagine stuff like gin/vodka ( the clear spirits) would be ok. Sherry, whisky, port, etc. will oxidise and therefore the flavour will deterioate. You can leave maderia for however long you want though, as it doesn't oxidise any further as it is only bottled when it has done this in the barrel.

Depends on if the wine has been kept under the right conditions, i.e. lying down at a constant temperature. Otherwise it might well have gone off.

That's a bit like saying milk won't go off unless of course you leave it out on the side in the warmth for a few days...............
