I am thinking of getting a new seperate surround system to replace my Panasonic SCPT850.
My tv is a Toshiba 42z3030 lcd, I also have a Sky hd box.
I will probably get a PS3 to play Blu-Ray dvd's.
First question, would it be ok to use existing speaker wires which are well hidden by new wooden floor and secondly could anyone suggest speakers to replace existing ones without having to do any more diy.
The rear speakers are identical to the front in size and position.I am trying to show a link to a picture of my set up.
My tv has 3 HDMI inputs and there is no back to the cabinet.
Many thanks
Ray

Thanks for transmitter details, but it is the sound system I am interested in. The tv transmitter is Ridgehill .I am looking to spend around £400.00 for a 5 speaker system so I can keep existing speaker wires, and ideally hook up new speakers in the same place and only have to connect to the back of the new unit, plus PS3, Sky HD Freeview and tv. Will the PS3 play std dvd's? and ideally I would like everything hidden in the cabinet.
Is it an option to use the old Panasonic speakers?
I will be guided by your superior knowledge.
Many thanks.

You would be far better off getting the Sony BDP-S300 Blu ray player it is an amazing machine and it upscales beautifully You can get it at a reasonable price <under £200> from play.com

Hi Ray, I have pretty much what you have (or intend to have).

I have a samsing plasma, PS3 (will play blu ray and normal dvd's) and Sky Hd

Your best bet is to get an av amplifier with enough connections to cope with what you want or intent to have connected.

The Sky HD is best connected to an amp with an optical cable and so is the PS3 so you will need an amp with 2x opticals minimum.

Speaker choice is up to you but if your budget is £400 you have some good options.

1 thing I would advise is that you get a speaker package with an active/mains powered subwoofer like I have. This allows the amp to channel bass through the sub and vocals/acoustics through the surround speakers. The sub has a lot of control for set-up and the amp will talk to it nicely through a simple connection.

Here are some recommendations from Richersounds

excellent system and good value

the 606 has better sound and better codecs

I would simply use the speakers you have to get you going and upgrade the speakers if neccesary

for me the amp is the main thing

HDMI 1.3 and HDMI inputs are the main thing and future proof yourself for a while

the Sony is a cracker for the price

£420 would get you the Sony STRDG820 and the Onkyo SKSHT518 speaker package.

This will give you HD audio from Bluray and DD/DTS from Sky+ HD and DVD when available - a cracking system for the price.

The PS3 will play standard DVD's though it's region coded, a UK machine will only play R2/region free discs.

It also upscales...

Would a 7.1 amp be suitable for a 5.1 speaker system?

Most 7.1 amps have the option to use 5.1 or 7.1 (or, indeed, 2.0, 2.1, 4.0, 4.1) speakers sets.

And 5.0, of course.
