to change it. any ideas where it might be
digital box works fine because its using scart lead
but when i use my ps2, analogue camcorder, or if i change digital box
and try and run it using composite you get a b/w picture with coloured
bands would a ps2 rgb scart cable work

What are you trying to connect?

You normally have to select the signal format in the device you are connecting to the TV so it corresponds to that particular input.

AV1 is generally RGB/Composite
AV2 S-Video/composite

You can also use the Red/White/Yellow connection that are normally found on the front/side of the TV, this is composite.

You may even have a dedicated S-Video connection round the back.

Just make sure that which ever connection you use the device is setup to output the signal that particular input accepts.

A black and white picture from a composite feed suggests that the input is set to expect an s-video signal when in fact it a composite signal is coming in.

You need to to go into the TV menu and find the AV input settings and select 'video' or 'composite' (same thing) when using a composite lead (yellow RCA plug - the red and white ones will be for right and left audio signals.)

If you use an s-video lead then obviously change the AV input to s-video. The red and white still carry the stereo sound separately.

Also as someone else stated, BOTH the device transmitting the signal and the TV receiving must be set to the correct signal format for a correct picture.

SCART leads can cope with composite, s-video and RGB and often can be automatically detected which is why your SCART signal is ok.

As outlined above, very often AV2 on a TV supports s-video and composite. On my old Panny you could toggle between the two by pressing the colour key for AV2 (green, i think!). This showed 'AV2' in the top corner.

Pressing the green button again changed AV2 to AV2S for the s-video setting.

With AV2S set and a composite feed coming in you get a B/W picture.
