I have an upscaling DVD player and a PS3...

However, DVD's don't look that great on my hdtv. Blu-ray looks incredible, but DVD's like Green Mile and 28 Days later don't look very good.

Halloween in particular is shocking!

get a star wars film or a dvd in the link above in region 2 and follow the set up to get the best of your screen

its a shame about your new scart not really helping you

you will need to play about with your brightness, colour and all that stuff

HDMI yeah, the dvd player is set to 720p - so is my PS3 which also gave poor results on 28 days later.

DVD player is Philips DVP 5960 and my TV is a Samsung Series 4 32" LE32A436.

Yeah scart was no different from sky+ to tv even spending a tenner lol

set PS 3 to 1080i

and dvd if it can handle it........ which it can

the telly manual goes on about DNile as well and HDMI black level normal high

you need to switch on and off all these things to get your desired good picture as per page 18

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...00Eng-0318.pdf manual

your RGB scart is AV 1 on tv

I would suggest the OP sets all the following on the PS3 to '3' if they have not done so already:

Mosquito Noise Reduction
Frame Noise Reduction
Block Noise Reduction

I've found my picture is almost faultless now with the above settings.

What do DVDs look like without upscaling? (I would suggest 576p).

Is that with DVD's or games/blu-rays you say it looks good?

I thought it was a given that all these upscaling DVD players ( unless you spend a lot of money?) are just a marketing gimick.

All LCD / Plasma flat panels have to have their own upscaler (downscaler) to fit the picture to the resolution of the panel.

Since its a fundamental function of the TV to do that function, they tend to have a better chip/software to perform that function than your average dvd player

it could be the telly series 4 and we are on series 8 now ............. so the telly may be out dated

we will await with baited breath to see if he did as we asked

I will try the suggested things when I get home later, thanks.
The Series 4 TV I bought isn't that old, it's play.com's best selling tv at present.

I don't really see what he's on about?, BluRay looks great (it will, it's HD), DVD looks far inferior (it will, it's only SD).

Biggest problem with HD is it makes SD look crap.

I presume hes playing normal DVDs on his PS 3 ??

and expecting it to warm up as hes complaining that 3 weeks later its still rubbish !!

as for upscaling and set at 720 will it really benefit at 1080 i ??

still gives it half a chance I suppose

If your TV is not a true 1080 panel, leave the 1080i setting alone!!!!! use 720p ( or 1080p setting if your tv will accept it) to prevent your TV introducing interlacing artefacts.
Most tv's will have to do some scaling weather you feed it a 720p or 1080.

My tv is 1080i - I read that it's best to set all devices to 720p though which I also found odd - so what should I set my PS3 and DVD to, 1080i or 720p?!

I will play about with the settings in my tv later, and will also change those settings on my PS3 that someone mentioned earlier, but it's not really a colour issue with DVD's, it's more like a detail issue.

I know DVD's won't be as good as Blu Ray, but upscaling DVD's should look better than they do on a standard tv surely.

You should get away from thinking about your TV as 1080i. What matters is a. what inputs will it accept? and b. what is its resolution? Very few TVs are native 1080i and I bet yours isn't one of those.

Most likely your TV is 768 or 720 lines and will accept a 1080i input but you need to be clear about what it is. EDIT I've just seen the model number and this is ndeed the case.

I will play about with the settings in my tv later, and will also change those settings on my PS3 that someone mentioned earlier, but it's not really a colour issue with DVD's, it's more like a detail issue.

Try them all and see which gives the best picture. DVD is DVD full stop, it may be the case that upscaling in the DVD player may be better but it could also be worse.

It is the DVD player I use to play dvd's and not the PS3.

What are the best settings to select within my PS3, as when I select auto it says my tv supports all of them including 1080p (which I know it doesn't) so maybe it's best just to set the PS3 to auto?

The DVD player can also be set to 'auto' or 720p or 1080i and others.

It is the DVD player I need to configure, not the PS3 as I don't use the PS3 for DVD's.

Sky+ is also a bitch because it actually looks worse on my HDTV than it does on my standard TV which shouldn't be the case surely?

I am new to HDTV technology so please excuse me, I just wish that there was a guide for this model of tv that told you the best settings because it's all very well saying play with the settings, but to me, all that happens is the screen either goes lighter or darker when changing them.

Try both settings, and see which YOU prefer - that's what customer settings are for. But if you're watching broadcast HD, 1080i is usually best, because that's what's broadcast.

Not really, your TV already upscales DVD's for you - unless the DVD player has a better scaler than your TV you won't get any improvement at all. And if your TV has a better scaler, then it would be actually worse.

Sorry to butt in with my own issue, but in regards to my ps3 and my tv, my accepts 1080p signals but obviously is not 1080p. Is it still better to set it as 720p?

LIke I said previously - try both - and see which YOU prefer, that's what the options are for.
