I've just bought a Sony DAV-S888 home cinema system a couple of weeks ago and I want to connect my Sky+ box up to it!
I've been looking at the Toslink cables and have noticed that you can pick them up for as little as £3, are these any good or should I be looking at the higher priced cables?? I assume that the more expensive cables have a larger internal diameter!! Is this correct, I'm new to all this!!!
Many thanks..............Mark

Like anything mate, you get what you pay for. I think toslink will only do minidisc anyway.

Spend at least £20-£30 on a good optical cable, you have a good home cinema kit so do not waste it.Experts say you should spend 10% of what the system cost on the leads to connect it.

For several years now I have been using toslink cables from various price groups etc, but to be quite honest I haven't been able to tell the diference in sound quality from the cheaper ones to the more expensive ones.

The only thing that seems to be different is the build quality of the cable and thickness of insulation. And no, toslink cables are not just for minidisc, they work with any device which has that type of connector such as amps/home cinema, cd/dvd players, Sky+, DAB as well as minidisc.

I would personally get one which has a thicker insulation as it should help to protect the fibre better and make less easy to bend and break which can be quite easy to do with the thin ones if you bend it too much to quickly.

Thats true, but cheaper leads can cause the optical beam to break and hence you lose some of the quality. It's the same as saying a scart lead is a scart lead. I hope we all know this is not true!!

The quality difference will not be noticable with a cheap TV,home theatre etc but when you are connecting good equipment it is certainly worth buying good leads.

OK......thanks for your help

I've oredered an Ixos lead off the net for £25, at the minute I'm using a scart lead into my tv for the home cinema system, would I get any benefits from using an S-Video lead or not??
