Can SD cards be faulty?
Moscow Flyer

Have been trying to get a brand new 4gb Transcend SD card (as packaged on amazon) to work in my digital camcorder and I just get a message that "card is full".

So I tried a spare 2gb SD card and that worked instantly without "formatting".

Can SD cards be faulty?

Or the card you bought is incompatible with the camera. Is it a SDHC card by any chance? If the camera is designed only for standard SD it may fail to read a SDHC card.

But yes it is entirely possible that the card could be faulty. But First I would check for SDHC on the card and in your camera spec. If the card is SDHC and your camera does not spefically mention SDHC then it is quite possible the card is OK but your camera doesn't know what it is.

the rule of thumb is the higher capacity the card is the bigger chance it might not be supported by a device, check out camcorder manufacturer site - they should list models of cards that they tested the device with and guarantee they would work.

Thanks for the replies guys. There doesn't appear to be any mention of HC and the packet says it supports devices with SD slot.

The camcorder packaging says it supports SD cards up to 4gb.

Just tried the card in a mate's camera and it says there is an error with it, so frustrating as its hardly worth sending it back. Didn't realise they could be faulty, we dropped one in the sea last year and it still works! Cheers anyway

Ask the retailer to send you a new card and ask them what they want you to do with the duff one

Was the card from Amazon itself of through a marketplace seller?

If it was through a marketplace seller (and incredibly cheap) then the possibility exists that it's a fake ..... which often have the kind of problems you're describing.

Marketplace sellers (for stuff like this) are almost a risky as ebay in terms of possibly ending up with fake stuff.
