With all the current chatter in the forum about talent vs X Factor, just thought I would start a little thread to highlight artists, past or present, who in your opinion have the X Factor, but are not noted for being great technical singers.

My contribution to start the ball rolling is a man who oozes personality, is completely unique, and shook the music industry when he burst on the scene in the 1970s, and was part of one of the most influential bands ever.

Couldn't sing for toffee though.

I'd have to disagree there, sorry. I couldn't stand him then, and I can't stand him now. Gross out.

I agree he is the biz. Not many super talents like bowie, lennon, kate bush would get past Simon lolz he dont want creativity and dont care much about talent

Many thanks

I'll add Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits then, can't post any links at the moment though.
By his own admission he wasn't much of a singer, but didn't stop them being absolutely huge.

I'd have to go with Dire Straits, especially as I was one of the first people ever to hear them. If I remember correctly, my English teacher said she was Mark's sister. She brought some music to English class one day to use us as guinea pigs to see what we thought, and the whole class thought they were brill.

My one and only claim to fame, lol. ( I know, I'm sad, lol )

Maybe it's a prerequisiste to being a megastar - you can't sing and so you try harder than the gifted do?

Not sure on that, regarding Madonna certainly, but Spice Girls were simply right place right time and Britney had a pushy mother.

Agree with all of those except Mel C, who's great as a solo artist!

Ok I'll give you Mel C.

Although I'm not sure if she's actually that good of a singer.

Her songs are good, I love Northern Star and Carolyna, but her voice I'm not sold on. Certainly better than the rest of the Spice Girls anyway.

(Well except Posh, she's my favourite)

Madonna CAN sing, but only averagely...but she is a megastar, she has that star quality and as such has maintained the publics interest for 25years.

likewise Robbie Williams can sing, but you wouldent say he's a world class vocalist...he's relied on charisma and personality to shift millions of records.

Kylie is another who is capable of singing live, but you dont go to see her in concert just for the vocal, its the personality and the sex appeal.

Britney has the xfactor too, but she cant even sing!

I should have said that they can sing too, just not amazingly well.

I think in all honesty when it comes to "The X Factor" unless the voice is of absolute A Standard, its not actually the most important thing.

Never thought of Kylie but that is another perfect example, listenable singing voice, but initial likeability from being in Neighbours added with some fun pop songs gave her the X Factor. It waned slightly before a return with more pop, boosted appeal after fighting Breast Cancer and now can do no wrong as far as the British Public is concerned.

Put her in a sing off next to a hotel singer though and based on vocals alone there is a good chance she would lose.

Same with Madonna, Britney etc

Its about the whole act, everything just being right at the moment they come on the market and it can be sky high success whilst someone with 10 octaves but nothing to differentiate them from other good singers can flounder and fail.
