Is your voice ugly?

One often thinks that his or her voice sounds exactly the same to other people as he/she can hear it in one's own speech. However, it is common that as we hear our recorded voice many people find their own voice as completely strange. When mentioning this others tell you that it sounds exactly the same as your "live" voice, which is easy to believe as other people's recorded voice and the live voice sound identical.

Why is it that we don't recognise our own voices when we hear them recorded? I wonder if celebrities or politicians who hear their own voices on TV every day are familiar with their own voices.

I'm not the only one who thinks after hearing own voice: "Do I really sound that ugly?" I've heard many other people say the same thing that they consider their own voice as ugly. Perhaps it has something to do with the very personal nature of the issue as well as we think that we sound the same as we hear ourselves which is different to how others hear us.

Have you been shocked when you have heard your own recorded voice?

Yes, it shocks me how bland and monotone it is! Ever heard yourself laughing on tape?? That's the worst!

I do much prefer my "internal" voice but then I guess that's almost inevitable for everyone as that's just what you become SO used to....

YES.

I really hate my voice, and I do agree that it is bloody strange when you hear it on TV or on record somewhere, and it sounds completely different to how you thought it sounded.

I'm half-deaf anyway and my voice sounds slightly different to a normal-speaking person, which makes it sound even worse. I sound a lot DEEPER when I hear myself talk than I think I am.

I think my voice is OK. I've never had a problem with it. But I do HATE hearing myself!

I recorded two of my friends singing karaoke when we were in Tenerife this year, and watching it back on my camera that same night, someone behind the camera was laughing in some weird hearty (embarrasingly scary) way.
I said to the friend that was stood next to me when I was recording that he laughed like a hearty hippo until he pointed out that it was me

My voice is quite high pitched and annoying. I have been reassured by others that it isn't though!

I hate my own voice when i hear it on a tape or on a video.

When I talk I think I sound like a stud muffin that every woman would love to talk to, when in fact I sound like Reg Presley on a bad day.

It's horrible... but i'm sure it doesn't sound as horrible in real life as it does on videos... it sounds so horrible on vids.

yes, i am disappointed when i hear my own voice outwith my own mouth to ear scenario.

I find that my overbearing and somewhat annoying personality tends to overshadow it.

But when you hear your own voice do you understand your broad scottish accent?

I prefer hearing my singing voice. That's not quite as bad as my spoken voice.

And isn't it strange that when you sing you don't sing with an accent (most of the time - The Proclaimers excluded)?

It sounds different because you are used to hearing your own voice largely by bone conduction through the bones of your jaws and skull rather than completely via your ears. Block your ears up and you'll still hear yourself.

My voice is quite nice... I think. It's smooth and clear, and quite deep for a tenor.

I also have that 'uppy-downy' intonation Welsh people have, apparently.

I've got a very soft voice with a slight husk in it. Guys say I would make a killing on the 0908 numbers.
