Food you can't imagine not having now
Okay, so I was thinking about this earlier when I was cooking the kids' dinner. What food or ingredients were not available in this country when you were kids (or if there were your parents just never bought them) but you cannot now imagine not having.
For me it would be pesto (kids had pasta and pesto which is why I started thinking about it) and balsamic vinegar. |

I remember only tasting mayonnaise in about 1991 - before then it was always salad cream in our house

![]() Jacket spuds cooked in a bonfire taste delicious though! (As long as they are left long enough, had many a charred tat that was raw in the middle )

hehe - Remembering the Fawlty Towers episode now! *edit: Quote:
Basil Fawlty: [gritting his teeth] Is there anything else we can get you, sonny? Master Heath: I'd like some bread and salad cream. Basil Fawlty: Well, there's the bread, and there's the mayonnaise. Master Heath: I said salad cream, stupid. Basil Fawlty: We don't have any salad cream. Master Heath: What a dump. Basil Fawlty: ...The chef made that mayonnaise fresh this morning. Master Heath: That's puke, that is. Basil Fawlty: Well, at least it's fresh puke!

Mayo was quite exotic in my youth. It was salad cream or ketchup.
Pizza wasn't easy to get unless you made it or went to a restaurant. I didn't eat Chinese or Indian food till my 20s. Vesta was the only thing you could get in a supermarket which was gross. Butter was like a brick or runny, not the lovely spreadable type you get now. Not food as such but gas BBQs - it took ages to get the charcoal to the right level to cook. Pina coladas - I had my first one in the Caribbean in the late 70s and no-one knew what I was talking about when I got back home. Same with key lime pie. |

Spuds, I like my mash and boiled potatoes with butter too much. Probably bread too.
