LCD monitor: Can it be set up with Freeview?
I want to get my wife a 19" TV for the kitchen, but haven't got a lot of money.
Pixmania has this 19" LCD computer monitor for £85 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1990...-format-t.html Is there a cheap Freeview box that would drive this? Is there a 19" LCD TV somewhere with Freeview built in? Thanks. |

There are loads of 19" TVs with built in Freeview out there.
Here's an example of a cheapish one - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131912 It would certainly be the neater solution. ![]() On the other hand you should be able to get a Freeview box to work with that monitor as long as it had HDMI output (here's an example of one), and you used a DVI to HDMI lead like this one. Also that cable wouldn't carry the sound, so you would need an audio lead and adaptor to take the sound from the phono outputs on the set top box, to the audio in socket on the monitor. The monitor does have speakers (according to the specs) but they are likely to be very tinny. The monitor has a DVI connection, but it's unlikely to be HDCP compliant, but these upscaling Freeview boxes aren't usually looking for that. You wouldn't be able to connect any Hi-def equipment to it though. There's no guarantee that the set top box would work though, so if you haven't already bought anything, the small digital telly would be the route to go IMO. (not necessarily the one I pointed to. That was just an example) |

Thanks.
I was hoping to total out at far less than the £147 TV that you kindly noted. |

I think you need to take a step back Donelson. Adding a layer of complexity where it doesn't need to be just to save a few quid is not necessarily gonna be helpful in the long run.
If you already have a 19" monitor and are trying to find a use for it, then look at getting an STB to pipe tv through. However, if you are getting kit from scratch, get something that is made for purpose. You can spend £120 getting all the components together, only to find they dont work or the end result is unmanageable. How much will your wife abuse you for that? Keep an eye out on a site like hotukdeals and hang out for a proper solution, that's my advice. |
