Is there a free video I can download? I really want to get optimized settings for my Samsung Series 4 HDTV.

ya want to be looking at something like the
DIGITAL VIDEO ESSENTIALS - HD BASICS - BLU-RAY Disk

you could look opn ebay
i know there are some on there
use this as the search text

DIGITAL VIDEO ESSENTIALS
or nip down to asda
http://www.asda-entertainment.co.uk/...ampaign=gp_dvd

or as suggested by niall borrow a dvd
Terminator 2 is a great one for the THX set up
you can find the hidden menu by navigating to the ear of the t2

but bare in miond these are a few years old so a newer more updated one is better.

Is not the THX Setup programs on DVD's only to be used to optimize your display device for that movie only..??

I hope not as thats gonna be a real pain if you need to do it for everyfilm that has a THX setup.
Anyway im pretty sure they are all the same so you only need to do this once unless of coarse you get a new TV or DVD/Bluray player.

from post #20 in this thread:

Five ways you can improve the picture quality of any TV for less than £30.

1. Put the TV in to Normal or Cinema mode. Cost: free
2. Turn off any dynamic contrast features. Cost: free
3. Turn off Noise Reduction and then reduce the sharpness control until the white halos around test and small objects disappears. Cost: free
4. Change the colour balance from Cool to either Normal or Warm and then reduce the colour control to get rid of the red glow in faces. Cost: free
5. Buy a copy of the Digital Video Essentials set up DVD and invest an hour of your time to get the best from your TV and surround system. Cost: £13.99 plus your time. The Bluray version is a similar price

Tip: Ignore anyone who says

"Don't buy a test disc; use a DVD with the THX Optimode test patterns on instead because it's free"

Optimode is only relevant to that particular film. A proper test disc is mastered to the correct reference levels for all movies, not just a single one.

If you need help to justify the cost of a test disc then consider this...

If you were offered an upgrade to a TV costing £100 - £200 more for just £15 would you turn it down?

A happy user...

I have an old Philips plasma which I was given and although I downloaded the manual it was appalling. All the trick modes were not explained, so it was hard to work out whether you wanted them or not.

I had a persistent problem with slow left/right pans where there was very annoying motion blur. I followed Chris's advice in post 20, turning off Noise Reduction, Dynamic Contrast and Sharpness and the problem is resolved.

It strikes me that any post-processing done to the incoming frames must take time, even if it's fractions of a second. No processor can be instant. If that is the case then it follows that the refresh rate must be compromised and therefore motion blur is almost inevitable.

Thanks Chris! For pointing me in the right direction....

Yes, no, maybe... ha ha!

The answer depends on the equipment you have. Some TVs have multiple calibration memories but most just have one.

Whatever happens just remember that if you use a good set-up disc correctly then chances your TV is going to look loads better than it would do on the factory settings.

no, once its set up ; thats it

makes normal tv viewing a bit darker

thats why some tvs have different settings and you might want to flick to another stored setting

its a personal choice and one you need patience for. However how it helps frailfury I dont know as you have to have the patience and play about with the settings

It could possibly be different for blu ray to an upscaled DVD, in theory anyway

its a personal setting

Beta is correct. There's quite a few cases of people finding noticeable differences between a TV set up done with a THX Optimizer disc and one done with a better reference disc such as DVE or AVIA.

It's also worth remembering that many of the THX certified DVDs have a lot of unnecessary edge enhancement. There really shouldn't be a need for artificial sharpening in the DVD master. Not a great endorsement for THX

In the past I used a THX disk and did not like the outcome. I then moved onto a DVE Disk and the difference in the image was very noticeable.

I now use a HCFR Colormeter with a SpyderTV Probe. A little over the top for the average user, But I have done all my Families TV's with it.

HCFR Colormeter

I've been seriously looking at various devices so I can calibrate my plasma and PJ, I'm edging towards the Eye One Display 2 as the reviews seemed a mixed bag in regards to SpyderTV Probe, I'm presume this was when the user was using the supplied software and not an issue with the probe, how did you find it using the alternative software (HCRF Colormeter)?

I don't think the SpyderTV Probe software is Vista compatible either, is this correct?

The Spyder TV software will work on Vista.. However it's awful. Tried it once and dumped it..

You need to tell the HCRF Colormeter Program that your using the Spyder Probe by placing an ini file into the working directory. After that away you go taking readings
