How about no themes next year and let the singers choose what they wants?

the reason? simple.

Solo artists cant sing group songs and men cant sing a person like Britneys songs. Also having a artist "theme" ust gives the show the chance to kiss the artists backside.

also why are the singers being asked to sing songs they would never put on their album?

let the finalists choose their own.

Themes bring challanges and make the weeks more interesting. Also can show if the artist is versatile or not. If alexandra could choose her own songs every week she would do a whitney/mariah or celine, it wouldnt show off that she cant sing up tempo or lower key songs.

The producers use themes to get out the acts they don't want in, they will never get rid of the themes.

Actually, I think the producers use themes to attract, ahem, big-name stars who are usually on a promotional tour.

The themes suck.

I think the theme weeks idea is great but the choices this year have been awful.

"Britney" night was the worst. They had the better idea last year when they did "songs from the movies" rather than "Celine Dion" night.

I think they should do broader themes - 80s night, Indie night, Rock night - perhaps even Non-English Song night - it'd show if the acts could adapt!

The themes are absolutely essential, otherwise you'd have a borefest of people doing tunes in their preferred genre all the time. The whole point is to get people out of their comfort zone to see how well they can adapt.

It would make total sense for each artist to chose their own tracks week on week in order to build up an authentic picture of their specific musical direction but that won't happen because, in order to fit this programme into it's early evening light intertainment slot, the songs have to be recognisable by the public.

I remember during the first series that Tabby wasn't allowed to sing Sympathy for the Devil because it was deemed too obscure a track to be known by the viewers. which said it all really about what this programme actually is.

I reckon there must be some sort of middle ground. It makes it interesting if there is some limit on what the contestants can sing each week, but at the same time, what does it matter whether a boyband can sing Britney or an indie chick can sing disco? They're not going to release any music like that so should stick to what they're good at IMO.

Themed weeks like number 1s, best of British, American classics, etc. are much fairer and don't disadvantage anyone. People always say that big band week is challenging for some of the contestants but there is still a massive range of stuff they can do (e.g. Same Difference with "Reach"!) Heck, even the odd artist-themed week is OK as long as they've got a good range of songs to pick from.

I don't know why people go on and on about this so called 'comfort zone'.

"You need to test yourself and get out of your comfort zone." Why do they? Once they release records they stay firmly rooted in their 'comfort zone'.

I agree that the themes are needed although for different reasons. They need them to get big name stars on the show.

i agree with this. The winner has to do what Simon Cowell says at thed end of the day. Only now Will Young seems to be doing what he wants to do.
I dont like them but do you think that JLS would pick such slow songs every week? nope.
Id go for no "artist" themes but have say a 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Pop, rock, movie, swing & rap week.
As i said before the only people who benefit from the Mariah Carey and Britney Spears weeks are Mariah & Britney as it plugs their new album or tour.
When Britney was interviewd im not sure if its coz she is still away with the fairies but she couldnt name 1 contestant in the show nor showd any real interest.

These kind of themed weeks would be much better and I would like to add the contestants should choose themselves what songs and how they would like to sing.
Because instead of the real authentic people we receive already manufactured puppets....

The only reason they have themes is to please the big artists they want to appear on the show. I hate themes and think it hampers the contestants. You'd never find Kylie doing heavy metal and the Rolling Stones singing Spice Girls. The contestants should do what they want and it would make for better performances and an all round better show

There are not that many network tv slots available with the sort of audience XFactor pulls, so artists with new releases would be attracted by the exposure offered anyway, no need for the contestants to sing songs associated with them as well (usually with dubious results.......)

Some artists do I agree but it works both ways. I don't think for one second that Take That or Britney Spears need the publicity. They'd sell records regardless.

Wasn't Britney Spears' appearance the biggest X Factor TV audience of the series? These additional viewers tuned in to see Britney not JLS.

I know it would be a huge long show, but I would prefer all the artists to sing two songs every week, one the mentor's choice, and one their own or in their own style, but maybe still keeping to the themes.

The rather tamer Irish version called You're Star have had a night when everyone has to sing songs made famous by an artist of the opposite sex. It's actually very broad.

Yay no themes!

Then we'd have them singing all the same songs every single week.

The themes should be kept more open, for example:

Best of British
American songs
Decade themes (80s week, 90s week, 00s week)
Big Band can stay too

But the whole thing about confining things to one artist (MJ, Take That, even Mariah flippin' Carey) is just stupid.

This years themes were just perthetic!
Take That, Britney, Micheal Jackson, Mariah Carey Whats that all about!?

I prefered last years themes!
Films, Love, Big Band, Best Of British, Number 1's, Semi Final - Judges Choice + Contestants Choice.

I think the themes are good, Otherwise, everyone will just be singing in the comfort zone, and noone will know what they can actually do.
But i prefer 07's themes!

The themes last year were the best, there were no restricted themes and the guests were relevant. This year they seem to be picking a theme and having a completely irrelevant guest.

I agree the broader themes last year were good, bar Disco week.

But Take That, Maria, MJ, Britney, Rod Stewart =

ABBA week was good though
