No dial tone
Hi,i have a problem on my bt line my phone line has gone dead there is no dial tone and the display on my phone has gone i have tried to plug it into the test socket but still the same,if i ring my house number from my mobile it still rings i have tested the voltage across the 2 terminals in the back of the phone socket and i am only getting 0.8v.
ps before the line went dead i was getting a lot of static down the phone aswell. Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is before i ring bt and they tell me it is going to cost £120 or whatever the call out charge is. Thanks |

Does your line feed into your house from an overhead wire, or is it direct from an underground cqble??
Somewhere there should be a socket/terminal box where the external wire connects to your internal wiring, you need to isolate your wiring from the external wire the test towards the exchange, should get 50v dc |

it comes in from an overhead wire thru the window sill strait to the bt socket that is about 3 inches away from the window and thats where my phone is plugged in.

openreach only charge if the problem is located on the
end users own equipment or wiring or if the openreach maintained wiring/network has been damaged other that fair wear and tear.... if you report the line as faulty they will test the line and it will indicate to them where the problem is, they will probably give you an idea of where the tester states the fault is. they will also read out usual CAPC (customer aware potential charge) its standard policy but in general if there is no dialtone at the test socket of the nte or at the master socket with a known working phone plugged in ( and all other devices unplugged) then the problem is openreach's to fix, look in the first couple of pages in the phone book it describes this process |

Bt can still charge you if it is deemed that you caused the problem.
If your overhead wire runs through a tree and a branch has rubbed through the cable I am afraid you will get charged. They now have a department that looks for any potential charges towards a customer called "TRC spotters" (TRC=Time related charge) The enginner will be in deep poo if he does not charge you for this sort of damage. |

I had no dial tone this afternoon.
I called bt's fault line from my mobile, and it detected a fault and they said they would text me about it... but 10 minutes or so later it was fixed which I thought was good. |
