Sony Speaker Sets
neutronxx
26-06-2001
Hi,

I've been looking around at 5.1 systems recently and have seen the new speakers from Sony. They have the catalouge of SAVE XXX but go by the name of Pascal. I especially like the look of the SAVE 705's for their compact size and good looking design.

My question is are these speakers any good? They retail from around £400 which is enough for me. Has any one recently got these, or any other in the pascal range.

Or are there better surround speaker packs for the money?

Cheers

Sorry to upset you but while the Sony's look great and are really well made, they basically sound crap. I have heard better PC speakers. If you can afford it and are after a full 5.1 system then spend £800 on the KHT2005 sub/sat speaker package. It wipes the floor with anything else of similar design. of courseit's not quite as good a set of say Dynaudio's but they are unobtrusive and not far off a set of "proper" speakers. They also do a set of two satellites and one sub for £500 ish.
I bought them because I did not want to fill my living room with speakers (I also own a set of Snell type "E"'s which are pretty big and they are run off a dedicated stereo so wanted something to do the movies justice without taking the living room over.
Also stay away from Bose - far too coloured. Initially sound big and fat but you soon get fed up. Also the new Mission NXT panels - very unobtrusive but can sound hard when pushed. The Kef's knock them for six.

I have the SAVE705 Pascal set driven by a Yamma A5, sounds ok in my room but of course I know they've had $hite reviews. But since the DVD TV Video and other things are Sony and I tried them in a store and was happy, I still bought them. I think they are quite punch.

PS. I use them mostly for movie soundtrack.....this may be a factor....
