Clapping Along

Does anyone else find the audience clapping highly irritating?!

I've just watched Rachel's tango on youtube, and was completely disturbed by the clapping along ALL the way through. Not even like when people get fed up halfway through and it fades out pathetically in dribs and drabs. It was especially distracting because the atmosphere needs to be so much more intimate for a tango. Why do people feel the need to do that? Really, if I were a producer, I'd outlaw it until the end of the dance (with the permissible odd whooping).

It's always dreadfully out of time anyway.

Or am I just a clapping-hating meanie?

The producers probably encouraged them to 'clap along'. If they are instructed to clap on the off beat (the Americans and most of other Europeans do), then you can still hear the beat (which is important for the dance).

But here people clap on the 1st and 3rd beat, which, I guess, can be distracting to the dancers (who's trying to dance to the beat), if anything...

I find that annoying as well, unless the dancers encourage it. It's just weird during a ballroom dance, and distracting. And there's enough people in the audience with no rhythm to screw it up.

I was in the audience week 1 this year, and before the show the floor manager comes on and says that he wants you to applaud the celebs (who are all nervous) when they do good moves, clap along with the music, and generally make a lot ofr appropriate noise. It adds to the feeling of the show having the audience reactions, and it helps the celebs apparently.

clapping, is part and parcel of dance comps, at the younger ages they audience is encouraged to clap the beat for the dancers, but the main dif being, (mainly under 8s and under6 rosette dancers do waltz and Chacha) is that during the cha cha you clap one two cha cha cha, so it annoys me during strictly when during a cha cha they clap one two LOL

In the German version they tend clap to the off beat, somewhat off putting for the dancers

I thought the audience were probably encouraged in that respect. I guess it isn't as bad as in shows like "I'd do anything" where the clapping drowns out the singing but I still find it rather rude and ignorant. Worse still is that the audience don't seem to have any particular grasp as what a good move is, just as on "I'd do anything" they applauded any contestant stepping towards camera without falling flat on their face, or singing a bit louder even if it was out of tune.

The only 'appropriate noise' would be an exclamation of disappointment, surprise or shock if a contestant falls over or is dropped. Anything else is impolite.

Clapping along doesn't bother me as much as the audience jeering - especially when Craig is trying give a give a critique. It's far too pantomime and gets on my nerves. Will the guy ever be allowed to say what he thinks without the audience (or Len for that matter) cutting him off ?

I don't watch X-Factor - tried to watch it twice - but omg, the baying mob rule of the audience is so overpowering it's totally put me off watching ever again. It's pants anyway lol, but enough !! I really don't want Strictly going the same way.

I would like to clap them around the ears.

Yes it is irritating.

It does amuse me on music based shows when they clap whenever the person finishes the first line and when they hit a high note and therfore drown it out.

BUT the worst clapping was when Andrea Bochelli and Katherine Jenkins were singing a soft song and the audience drowned them out clapping a pro dance.

I don't mind the clapping, but I've often wondered if it puts of the celeb making it harder for them.

Good post, if perhaps a bit off topic for the purists.

I agree, the jeering of Craig is ridiculous when you think that of all the judges he usually has the most interesting, constructive things to say. I'd really like the tables turned and have Len turned into the pantomime villain for a change, goodness knows the cap fits - or better still, like you suggest, no more panto!!

I quite like the 'panto' bits - at least we have Bruce to keep the audience in line!

Soooo irritating, I agree. In fact I think it's downright rude to have singing guests on a show and then drown them out mid-song with applause for the dancers, who are there the accompany the singer, not vice versa. It happens every week, too.

OK, just for you we can keep the 'panto'. But only if Len is the villain from now on.
