Same number for 2 mobile phones
stu76wales

Hi,
I was wondeing if anyone can answer this question:

Is it possible to have 2 mobile phones that can both be used with the same mobile number?

It would just be handy to keep one for work where you don't mind it getting scratched a bit, and one for leisure. People would be able to call you on either phone without them having to have 2 different numbers to call you on.

Obviously, one SIM card will somehow have to be re-programed. Can a shop do this or do you have to send your SIM card away or can you buy anything to re-program a SIM card?

I currently have a Sony Ericsson (K300i) on PAYG with Tesco Mobile.
I'll be having a new Sony Ericsson (K770i) on PAYG on Orange.

Please let me know if this is possible.
Thanks.

Vodafone used to offer this service for corporate customers. However, its not going to work on domestic handsets and you would find the cost prohibitive. It was really designed for carphones.

Just having two SIM cards won't work because the netwrok wouldn't know which phone to route the call to.

You could always divert calls from one handset to the other when you are at work.

Not really what you're after but perhaps a "personal number" which tries one mobile and then the other if the first isn't answered?

It seemed like a good idea at the time, having 2 phones with the same number.
If it was possible, maybe providing both SIM's were on the same network, then surely the network would call both phones simultaneously when someone called you.

I wonder why Call Divert isn't possible on PAYG?
Exactly how does that work anyway? I've never understood that feature.

Simply swap the sim to the phone required ?

Nice idea, but lots of phones you have to remove the battery to get at the SIM card.
This means having to set the time and date usually, and I don't wish to do that.

Seems like there is not an alternative so far

Buy a phone that you don't need to remove the battery , my Samsung just needs the back off to access the sim , the battery stays put .

good luck

It looks that way.
Maybe if I can get a decent protective case for the new phone I'm getting for Christmas, that will hopefully do.

Orange have a service called Single Number, but only available to business customers, is this an option for you?

Thanks for suggesting it, but this won't work for me.
I'm a non-business user.
I don't really make all that many calls so that won't be a cost-effective solution.

is that tje '070' numbers? I would be reluctant to recommend that, the cost for anyone calling these numbers is absolutely ridiculous, if I were a caller and ended up paying up to something like £1 per minute for the call, I would not be doing business with that person again

If you purchase a number from Vonage then it would call a list of preset numbers in a particular order.

Not sure if this is still active though.

Say you have give someone phone 1's number but you are using phone 2, so you set phone 1 to divert to phone 2, what happens when someone calls your phone 1 is phone 1 will call 'phone 2' to forward the call. Probably not on PayG as it would eat into your credit on phone 1 every time someone called you. If that makes any sense...

Vodafone used to offer multi-sim, it has now been withdrawn though.
