My Sony dvd/hdd recorder is locked at the WELCOME message. No other functions apart from the fan spinning. I've tried pressing various buttons to try and reset, but none are responsive. At this moment a very expensive brick.Could it be a Power Supply Block Issue? Well out of waranty and the usual Sony reply : "Take it to a service centre" Any Thoughts?

Have you tried pressing the on/off button and holding it for 10-15 seconds? That should trigger a system reset.

Pull the plug and wait a couple of minutes. This should reset. Do a search for this model lots here about 'locking up'

Once you get it back, turn off auto updates.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have read through various forums trying to find a solution to this very annoying problem. It seems to be a hardware problem (Power Supply Board) as no matter how many buttons i press in sequence nothing is responsive. I've taken the cover off and there seems to be no power getting through to the HD or DVD tray....So me thinks Bin time...I'll remove the HDD and keep it as a spare. Thanks again for your thoughts and have a great Christmas and New Year....Hopefully Techno Glitch Free !!!! The switch mode power supplies are usualy the problem, and most are made these days as OEM from China. What you can do if you have the skills is replace all the Electrolytic Capacitors as they maybe leaky, take a look and if any have bulged then thats you culprit.
I would try to replace those before binning the unit.

Thanks for your advise Sila 1999. I'll have a tinker with it when i have the time. It's infuriating when you think $ony are still resting on their laurels and getting away with selling basically inferior goods. I've read some horror stories on these forums about $ony's "Customer Service"....Well after my little debacle....That's the end of my $ony love affair...I'll be spending my dosh on a less expensive mistress...i.e The amazing Amanda Amstrad or the beautiful Betty Beko!....Cheers!!

You could always sell it "as is", or sell parts of it. We have three Sony recorders, our 710 DVD recorder has become almost unuseable to record disks, it has created about 3,000 of them. We have taken the DVD recorder out of our 310 to complete transfers of data off the hard disk (it didn't get used much, our schools use most of it's recorders for evening/overnight programs, then sort them out during the day). None of the "service centres" will just sell the optical drive, have to do a "proper investigation/repair" which would not be worth it.
