Ha! Got your attention.

I have a Philips LCD TV with a slot for a PCMIA card. I know that it is so that the TV can receive a wireless signal, however want to know if anyone utilises this funcion or how it could be useful.

Could I stream content from my PC?

Fnar, fnar!!

The PCMCIA slot is likely to be for a CAM - conditional access module - which is a fancy way of saying "here's how you get Satanta and other subscription freeview services on your TV without an extra box" It's nothing to do with wireless or wired network cards.

Depending on the model of Philips TV (hint: that would have been a REALLY USEFUL bit of info) then you've also got the Streamium Wi-Fi functionality in the TV. This is how you can stream and control pictures, music and some video formats to the TV.

There's normally a bit of software supplied with Streamium Wi-Fi enabled products. It runs a little server application on the host PC. This is how you can see file lists and thumbnails on the TV and make selections.

More info on Streamium at http://www.streamiumcafe.com/vBulletin/index.php

Later TVs have a conventional RJ45 network port. This ups the bandwidth capabilities so that higher resolution video files can be played. As long as your PC or NAS drive support DNLA then you can use the TV to access content on shared folders across your network.
