TMobile G1 or iPhone?
Hi everyone,
I'm stuck. I'm getting a new phone, however I can't make up my mind into which one to go for. The Google phone is cheaper, and right now I could do with the money, but the iPhone is, well, the iPhone. What would you guys recommend? Thanks, Tom

Last week I had the same problem. In the end went for the Iphone, very impressed. Also, I was on Virgin who use T-Mobile and not the greatest reception where I live and work. O2 is alot better with 3G most of the time. Steve

Depends what you want it for. Music probably the iphone, internet go for the g1. There was apparently a comparison done on the gadget show of the two and the g1 came out better. Not sure how indepth it was though as ive not seen it.

Well I own the iPhone and sell the G1. If you can put up with O2's patchy 3G coverage and not so good value tariffs then I'd recommend the iPhone.

iPhone right now, though TMobile have a much much better 3G network than O2.
I think in 12-18 months time Android will start to look really good. Its a bit rough around the edges at the moment. The media side of things for instance is quite lacking. |

Watched the G1 review and the head socket loses points. I'd say get the iphone if you can afford get this as intermediate. Better the ipone really maybe best to save a little longer. When you get the iphone get google mobile app free. Change the settings and it's voice activated web searching that works reasonably well. Also get the vmail app free very very cool.

They have now reached 80%, but other networks are nearing / around 90% and have plans to reach 97-99% 3g population coverage within the next 18 months - 2 years, such as T-mobile. |

Depends what your looking for. If you want an MP3 player thats also a phone get iPhone, but if you want a multi tasking multi functional device thats currently the best on the market for web browsing get a G1. I've had both and have to say the G1 is leagues ahead of the iPhone. It's a pleasure to use and allows me to do what i want.

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for the replies. I have decided to get the T-Mobile G1 for the phone/internet, and get an iPod Touch as well for media uses. I got it this morning, and I get 700 mins or 1400 texts on Flext for £30 per month, 18 month contract. It includes internet. It's just charging at the moment, I'll write a quick review for you guys later on what it's like. ![]() Thanks, Tom

O2 has officially the least 3g coverage of any network. They were threatened with a fine by Ofcom because they were the only UK network not to have reached the required 80% earlier in the year.
They have now reached 80%, but other networks are nearing / around 90% and have plans to reach 97-99% 3g population coverage within the next 18 months - 2 years, such as T-mobile.

I journey up and down the county regularly and found my iPhone terrible. Friends and family couldnt contact me, i wasnt receiving texts until a day later, even had voice mails showing a week late. Generally O2 are a disgrace and by far the worst operator. I don't actually believe they have 80% coverage. In reality it feels less than 50%
Its good news that you live in a pocket where 02 seem strong and if that works for you then thats great since that is most important. |

Yeah I was the classic up in the bedroom by the window trying to get a signal. I only kept with them for so long because I was on the Virgin 300 mins 300 txt deal.
My Christmas present is the new phone............ |

From what I have heard on the grapevine, be prepared to charge it a lot, especially when you add some apps. Android has potential. It all depends on how well the developers take it and what Google does with it from here.

Hi everyone,
So far so good! Over night, on previous SE Phones, I would lose about 10% charge. On this, I lost just 1%, so clearly the batetry is more efficent. I've turned off GPS and Wi-Fi and installed the Toggle Settings app, which allos me to turn on/off very quickly. Are there any good apps that people would recommend? Thanks, Tom

I love my G1 but I only turn on the 3G when I want to use the net as it really does save the battery. I upgraded from the N95 original version and find the software alot better. My N95 was a nightmare for crashing and the web&walk reloading was annoying.
The only thing I haven't figured out is how to forward text messages on it. |
