What hard drive fvrt 100

Put in 1-2 years ago a Maxtor 6G160PO. Had bourght the power pack as suggested by this forum, thats going well but the FVRT will not boot properly and shows the wrong time (starts at 0000 every time I turn the power off). Nothing come up on the screen. Because the HD is running very hot does this mean that the HD is bust. If so would like to go for a 160GB 2.5" HD, can anyone suggest a good model that will work and would it need the cable adapter.
