Dear all,

I have a sony iDTV KV28DS60 which has 3 SCART and an S-Video connector. One SCART can handle RGB in, the other 2 SCART and the S-Video can all handle S-Video in.

My question: Is there any way to get the SCART or S-Video to OUTPUT S-Video?

DVDs can. Camcorders can. There must be a way ....

I have an analog WS Sony TV and I can change the AV inputs/Outputs to whatever I like via the OS Menu.

I'd be very surprised if Sony left this feature of the newer IDTV models.

The menu system has choices for setting AV presets for signal inputs, ie I can set AV2 in to S-Video and AV1 in to RGB but it doesn't appear to be any settings to allow S-Video or RGB _OUT_ .

What settings do you see on your TV that allows this?

I too can set.....
AV1 to RGB in or Composite in.
AV2 and AV3 to S-Video in or Composite in.

I can also set...
AV2 and AV3 to S-Video OUT or Compsoite OUT.

This is all done via the AV menu screen.

I'm not too sure abour RGB OUT though.

I'm at work at the moment so I'll check it when I get in later and let you know.

Maybe they removed this feature on your set to keep the costs down. Check with your manual or Sony.

I have an S-VHS VCR and a Cable STB digital.
I use the SCART out of the STB to my SCART (s-video) in on the VCR.
I think this is a composite signal which would explain the poorer picture that I was used to getting with Analogue Cable via the RF signal, which was MUCH better.
Having said that, the signal would be in B&W as the SCART switch on the VCR is set to S-Video in, i'll check it out later.

I don't know about the Sky STBs, sorry.

That's VERY interesting! Can you post the model of your Sony TV please.

I've had a good look through the manual and the menu items but have found no
mention of setting s-video out.

If there is an option in other Sony TVs to set S-Video out then there's the
possibilty that it can be turned on somehow in my model.

I have set the SCART input on my VCR to S-Video in as well as composite in
and neither appear to be S-VHS quality when recording from TV out.

I have linked up my DV camcorder to S-Video in on the VCR via an s-video
lead as well as s-video to SCART converter with superb results.

Ho hum .... there MUST be a way!

I think it's a 32W (50 hz model ). I'm not too sure. I'll let you know later when I get home.

Are you sure?

You'r still recording an S-video signal, albeit at a lesser resolution than the normal 400 lines but higher than the VHS resolution of 250 lines. Probably around 350 lines with all the interference that comes with a composite signal.

What's the quality like when you record from the RF signal?

As you cannot change your STB to ouput to S-Video then the TV out via Av is your last hope. I'm sure there must be a way.

I take it you are using the second SCART on the STB. The other one being used as the RGB out to your TV.
If so, then does this second SCART offer RGB out, as this maybe your only option, via an 'RGB to S-Video' converter, which is a bit expensive though.

I don't have an STB - it's an integrated digital television. It was on special offer and I got a very good deal on it. It's a great TV but apparently without S-Video out. Which I didn't know at the time.

The TV has the following connectors:
3 x SCART and Audio L+R on the back. One SCART can do RGB in, the other two can do S-Video in.
1 x S-Video 1 x composite and Audio L+R on the front
None of them apparently can do S-video out.


I haven't tried recording directly from RF, always via SCART. I'd imagine the RF signal to be worse than SCART (audio and visual in the same signal) but will give it a try when I get back in.

Record quality to S-VHS from the AV output is better than standard VHS but is so not on a par with recording the S-Video output from a digital or Hi-8 output. I imagine that if I can get the TV to output s-video or RGB (with an RGB to s-video converter) and record this at S-VHS then quality will be fantastic.

I see. I don't know why but I was under the impression that you were also using an STB. Must of got you mixed up with another post!

I am thinking of upgrading to an IDTV, but I will definatley make sure that it has S-Video out. I would of probably over-looked this so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Can you record anything from the TV?
If it doesn't have RGB out then how are you going to convert it to S-Video.

Also, don't these newer TVs have some sort of 'iLink' feature where whatever is being viewed on TV can be sent to your VCR?
Or does the VCR need to be 'iLink' compatibale?...I'm not sure.

BTW, how much did you pay for your TV and is it 100Hz? If so have you noticed any 'artefacts' with the 100Hz scanning?

I bought it for £750 since it was end of line and had very slight cosmetic damage to the side. Sold as new with full guarantee. It needed a free upgrade to an internal bit in order to get the full OnDigital service and also has a builtin modem.

It is 100Hz and performs brilliantly in my opinion but since I have never owned a decent TV in my life this is without a great deal of comparison - just what I saw in the shops.

If I can't get S-video or RGB out then I'd not recommend getting an iDTV at the moment - get a STB instead. In the future the sets will probably evolve to incorporate what consumers really want.

I can record to video very easily via a fully wired SCART - either by direct recording of what's on TV, VideoPlus, or by setting the TV timer. All work flawlessly. For TV timer recording the VCR does need to be 'intelligent' ie capable of iLink, Smartlink or any of the other brandnames for this functionality.

So, very nice TV but apprarently without that all important high quality video signal out.
