Wire snapped from telephone pole while cutting tree down.

We were cutting a tree down in the garden. As the tree fell it got caught in the telephone wire and has snapped. All the phones in the house are dead.

When I call BT out what do I tell them and Will I be charged???

The line was only installed a month ago.

I expect you will be charged as it is a fault caused by you.

unfortunately you will be charged for the repair. even saying it was storm damage, as the tree is on your property we have to raise charges, if the engineer doesn't then someone else who looks at all our completed repairs will raise the charges.

Seriously though, unless the tree managed to defeat gravity (trees are generally stationary until you start messing with them) and jump up above the telepone line, before taking it down, you're pretty much stuffed ( :sleep: ) as cutting down the tree, (I'm sure they'd argue), you should have made sure that the branches would not disrupt the wiring.

Put the You've been framed money towards the Open Reach repair (here's hoping you captured it all on video).

Is there a number you can phone regarding trees and BT lines (I always find it impossible to get through to a human being now, after about half an hour of going round in circles I just give up). A tree at the front of our house is starting to foul the neighbours phone line and, as he runs a business from home, it would be better to get the tree pruned now rather than later. The tree is on the verge between our fence and the road, so not clear if its on our land or not. If BT prune the tree, would they charge us? The easiest thing for us is just to do nothing and claim the tree is not our problem as its not on our land, but personally that just seems like storing up trouble for later.

Speak to your local council and ask how you can find out. There will be plans somewhere that will show the actual plot of land that you own, thus revealing whether this is your problem or not.
