Christmas/New Year & Network Meltdown

Well its nearly that time of year again and so the networks will be having problems as the end of the year approaches quite rapidly. So, what i wonder is why sometimes during the christmas and new year period do you experience signal loss and even complete loss of the network(no network name or signal on display). Is it just congestion and too many users crashing the main servers?

I'd imagine that combined with fewer staff working behind the scenes to fix things.

On all networks that I have seen, non lose signal but just get a bottle neck affect and get "Failed" errors when sending messages, I switched from 3 to o2 so would be good to see what the difference in time fixed will be like, messages started to send at 4am on New Years Day on 3/Orange

Usally for an hour or so christmas morning a text on 02 can sometimes take two tries before it will send. For two hours after the bells at new year I usally have problems phoning on the mobile and texting. Also last year I noticed a few hours before the bells 02 stoped the 02 text after you called or texted to letting you know your 02 balance.

Christmas day you have a million new phones being opened and then having to register with the networks, this causing congestion.

new years eve, networks see a month's worth of text messages in just a few hours, which also causes massive congestion.

Having worked both a Christmas and new years eve in a NOC its bloody carnage, its pretty frustrating that there is sweet nothing that you as an engineer can do to help the situation.

I expect O2 to take a hammering with all the iPhones that will be registered this year.

Indeed each cell is designed to have a maximum number of users on the assumption that mostly they are spread around the city. Texts are rarely sent immediately, only when there is some spare capacity in the network.

I think something like several billion texts are sent in the period (or at least certainly more than one billion). People sending a message to almost everyone on their contact list.
