I'm at my wits end! I bought the Foxsat-HDR yesterday, connected it up via HDMI and it worked fine!
Today, I powered it up, and even though the Foxsat boot-up splash screen appears, I then just get a blank green screen. The box still works normally via scart cable.
I have read various things online about possible difficulties with HDCP handshaking etc, and I have tried lots of things including changing the HDMI cable, and rebooting, powring up the TV and receiver in different orders, etc - but I always get the green screen.
I cannot understand why it all worked perfectly yesterday and not today.
I guess I shall just have to box it up and take it back for refund

I had this problem on several occasions with FOXSAT-HD and after powering down box (mains off) after that it seemed OK.

I also have FOXSAT-HDR noticed it once but now seems OK

I switch my TV first and then bring up BOX

I had this while recording, I changed my TV input to something else and changed it back and it worked fine then.

Maybe try that.

That is exactly what happened with me. My problem surfaced on a Hitachi plasma. If yours is Hitachi give them a call and you should get a free repair. I'd say that your're having problems with Shy HD as well. Seems like an HDMI HDCP update was installed around the same time I got Freesat. When I tried to revert to the Sky box I got a message saying the panel does not support HDCP. Someone has suggested that the original HDMI HDCP card in the panel isn't quite to standard, hence the free repair.

I have experienced this also on a few occasions on my Samsung. Switching off the TV and then on again seems to sort it. I think it is a well known issue.

What TV do you have? You mention that it is OK via scart, does that mean you have both HDMI and scart cables from the HDR box or do you have is the scart connection via a DVD player?
I think the modern TV's are sometimes just too clever in trying to guess which input to switch to. You could look if there is an option on the TV to switch off the automatic sensing and just let you decide which input you want to see. KIS I say.

I had this as an intermitted problem when using my FoxSat-HD with a Grundig tv. The tv was a couple months old when i got the Freesat box, after numerous support calls with Grundig (after Humax washed their hands of me) I was advised to take the tv back to Costco where I got it from. They replaced it with a newer edition of the same model of tv and it works fine now (touch wood).

This green screen is indeed a well known problem and as humax dont want to know, it leaves us users in a difficult position unless the tv is within warranty and the shop are as helpful as costco were.

I should also add that when speaking with the manager in Costco, his response as we left the store was "if you still get the same fault this time then it wasnt the tv after all!"

Has anyone come up with the answer to the "Green Screen" problem. Everything work fine for a few day then this morning all I got was a totally green screen.
Gear: Foxsat HD 320 and at the moment with a Tevion Flat screen TV from Aldi.
Switched the Foxsat on and off a few times than it started working.

We had this problem when we fitted a Grundig Freesat HD box to our JVC LCD via HDMI. The picture was there, but all in green! I found that if I first connected our XBOX360 via hdmi, unplugged the connection and re-plugged the grundig back in, everything was fine...until the TV was switched off. Then it was the same palaver all over again. It seems to be early implementations of HDMI. Our new TV (a Pana 32LZD80) is fine.

To clarify, this problem is due to incorrect HDCP implementation in the TV - so any set which claims to be 'HD Ready' isn't actually so, and the manufacturer/retailer should arrange for the set to be updated accordingly, and free of charge. This is normally just a software update.

Any set that pre-dates the HD Ready logo was never guaranteed to work, so even if it can be done, there's no reason for that to be free.

OK, but I get it with my box connected to a Yamaha amp then to a Toshiba TV via HDMI, so what does that have to do with "HD ready"?

Do you get it if you connect the PVR directly to the TV?.

If it works OK direct, then it's a failure of your amp - which isn't 'HD Ready'

Not a very correct term for an amp, but not handling HDCP correctly.

What does it have to do with HDCP? So the HDR comes on on BBC1 and I get no picture! No, that is a fault with the HDR!

Anyway the amp is hdmi 1.2a and hdcp 1.2, but it does say that it is not compatible with hdcp-incompatible devices!

If it were itself incompatible with hdcp, I suppose I would never be able to watch BBC HD, would I?

Finally, would Yamaha and Panasonic get it wrong, or would Humax? Think about it! No-brainer!

It's everything to do with HDCP. HDCP requires a handshake procedure between the device sending the picture and the device receiving the picture over hdmi or dvi connections. This ensures that the device receiving the picture is a display and not a digital recorder. Without the handshake the sending device witholds the picture doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Failure to properly handshake can be at either end so you can't just say it's got to be the hdr it could be either. My foxsat-hdr (and the foxsat-hd before it) works with no problem with my Sony Bravia.

I don't understand, is your foxsat connected directly to the bravia? I don't recall any problems with my box connected that way. So what initiates the handshake? There are several possibilities. Do you manually switch your bravia to hdmi1? Then switch the hdr on? Or vice versa? Or does the hdr switch the bravia to hdmi1?

Here is the problem. I press a remote button to change the amp to dvr mode and switch the tv to hdmi1. At this stage the hdr is in active standby: I don't want it on all the time. I then power on the hdr and there is no handshake. At what point does anything decide there is/is not a recorder anywhere?

I then (unnecessarily) press another button to switch the amp to my media player (sending hdmi1 again to the tv) and finally press the amp dvr button again, and lo! I get a picture!

Mine is directly connected and it makes no difference what the order is. As soon as the foxsat-hdr is connected to the bravia hdmi port and is booted the picture appears. I also have a scaling DVD player and a blueray player and these are routed by a Denon AV amp to a second HDMI port on the TV and again handshaking works every time. But you appear to have confirmed that the foxsat works with a direct connection to a TV hdmi proving that the foxsat and the TV are both fine. As Nigel pointed out this clearly points to your amp (or the hdmi link from the amp to the TV) as the source of the problem.

I said I don't recall any problem, but that connection was very temporary!

That makes me suspect the dvr is that this only happens when the dvr is recording and in standby, and not always. I don't get a problem with my dvd player. Nor my media player. (Both connected to the amp, a Yamaha DSP-AX861SE.)

In any and all cases, an interface that fails like this is pure crap!

Oh, and at one stage I ran all HDMI leads via an HDMI hub directly to the TV, routing only the audio via the amp, and got exactly the same problem: when the hub switched back to the dvr, no picture!!! QED

I still claim the balance of probability suggests a fault with Humax and not Yamaha, Toshiba, Hitachi, Samsung... The latter are not fly-by-night newbies who write buggy software all the time!

Everything to do with HDCP, becasue that's the effect you get with it. I asked before, does it work perfectly if you connect the PVR to the TV? - so does it?.


Think about it? - OK - Panasonic issue software updates to correct HDMI/HDCP problems, I think all manufacturers have done so (Pioneer - who are the most expensive - even had a poorer implementation than anyone else).

The Humax boxes seem to work fine on all TV's that implement HDCP correctly, and problems are limited to a few sets that don't appear to, and those manufacturers have mostly issued updates to cure the problem.

How would I know? Do you expect me to run it like that without my £700 amp? You must be joking.

I said that it sometimes didn't work going via an hdmi switch, didn't I?

Finally, tell me, the Humax has been out for 2 months, and we have it recorded above that it doesn't work with all those bits of equipment, but does with a bravia tv, so what do we conclude?

Why are you so eager to cover up this bug?

Fact: occasionally when coming out of active standby the Humax fails to negotiate with several devices.
Solution: make bl**dy well sure it does!

So does mine! It is when it is in active standby (already booted, but recording, and in standby) that it sometimes fails. Are you absolutely sure yours never does that? Cos nothing else of mine behaves that way!

Simply so you can isolate where the fault lies, instead of jumping to conclusions. Why would it make such a big difference to run it through an amp anyway, connect the box directly to your TV, and the amp via optical - exactly the same quality (if not better), and it will remove one component from the puzzle.

Connect it back as originally afterwards, once you've proved it.


Again, an extra added component that could be causing the trouble.


I've no interest whatsoever in covering any possible bug, merely to try and assertain where the said 'bug' lies. As far as I'm aware there have been no such bugs reported with the Humax PVR, all such alleged bugs have been elsewhere.

I get it momentarily with my Pioneer 428XD plasma but then as the box boots the screen goes black but goes to the splash screen then programme when booted.

I'm not sure what the problem is if you get a permanent green screen but would think as others have said, it is a handshake problem between the tv and Humax box.

Have you taken the HDMI cable out and reseated it in case the connections are loose?

Have you re-examined the HDMI settings in the tv and made sure all the correct settings are there?

Have you checked HDCP is enabled in the Humax box?

Mike do what I do, put the HDMI cable straight to the tv then an optical cable from the Humax Opt Out to your amp.

Thats a far better solution as you only then need to have your amp on when using surround thus saving electricity. It also takes 1 component out of the HDMI link.

When you want surround you just mute the tv and turn the amp on. When you don't want surround, you just keep the amp turned off and watch tv as normal.

I didn't do this to work around HDMi authentifcation problems as I haven't had any, but it serves as a work around and provides a far more sensible way of connecting it to the tv for most people as very few people use cinema sound except for films.

Switched mine on many times while it was recording, in order to watch the recording in chasing playback. Never had any problem at all getting a picture.
