Am I the only person who was only made aware of this songs existant because of X-factor.

I have only heard Alexandra version. I also heard a few seconds of Diana's version a few days before the final (couldn't take more than a few seconds) I only listened to her version (a few seconds) to familliarise myself with the song as I had never heard of it and heard that it was going to be the winners song.

So the first time I heard the whole song was when JLS and Alex sang it in the final.

I think Alex's version is great and I quite enjoyed JLS's version as well (I voted for JLS to win)

Why am I the only person in the world that has never ever ever heard this song before last week!

Never heard of the Buckley or Cohen people either

Thank god for that.... I was beginning to think I was the only person. Everyone is talking about it as if it is as popular as "Happy Birthday to you"

I feel a bit left out of all of the discussions about which version is better than which..

I feel as if I must have been on another planet whilst eveyone else has been listening to Hallelujah 24/7 for decades.

Shame on you all for not knowing of Leonard Cohen, my 22 year old son plays his stuff all the time and thinks Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah is brilliant. I won't tell you what he thinks of Alexander's version, it's not printable.

AlexandRA, not Alexander. She's female.

Those of you
who don't know who Cohen is, can I ask how old you are?

My younger sister reckons he sounds like a "miserable old drunk"!

I'd never heard the song either until it was sung on x factor. I had heard of Leonard Cohen but thought he was a musical conductor or something. But I am pleased to say that I'm now a fan of Cohen and think he is a fantastic poet/writer.

Edited to add, I am 45 years old.

Just a quick point from PedantsRUs , you still didn't hear the "whole song" then.

The X Factor version only has 3 verses, which stunts the song terribly. (My opinion, I know)

It's debatable how many verses actually exist - most covers use 5, I think. (But not all the same ones!) I am aware of seven verses. When John Cale asked to cover it, Leonard Cohen sent him 15 verses.

Leonard Cohen when performing it live usually sings 6 verses, but the one he omits is not always the same one.

Maybe you were thinking of Leonard Bernstein?

My brother agree's with your son. He was disgusted when he heard the X Factor winner was doing a version of it.

But each version of the song has the same tune and the same lyrics. So that's a bit of a contradiction really isn't it?

Im actually quite disturbed that some people had not heard if before actually. What on earth do you listen to? Its even in the film Shrek!

Oh dear... am I not quite normal if I have not watched all of the shrek films.

as it happens moonbaby... I have only seen one of the shrek films... the one with a Cat in it. And I don't remember what/if any music was even in the film as I was too busy enjoying the animation.

I am an undergraduate at Uni and as you can imagine us students listen to loads of music.

I just don't know that one song. I have never ever heard it until last week.

Now that I have heard the X-factor versions I am a bit scared to listen to the other so-called better versions incase they are horrible.

Alex sings the song really well and as I don't know any better at the moment I can't compare it to the classic version/s

What really shocks me is not that people haven't heard the Cohen/Buckely version etc but that they didn't see Jason Castro do it on American Idol this year. I always assumed that X Factor fans watched both!
