Service Menu - WTF ?
Hi,
I've got a JVC TV that's playing up - blurred picture round the edges - and would like to have a go at fixing it myself before calling out a £90/hour or whatever TV repair man. From reading this forum I can access the service menu (mute + i) and can work out what some, but by no means all, of it means. Is there anywhere you can download the service manuals ? - I can't see anything on the JVC.co.uk site. |

If it is blurred around the edges it is very unlikely that a service menu will help you as service menus normally relate to geometry and system parameters.
Either the tube is failing or the focus needs adjusting, take it to a TV repair shop, I am sure you would be pleasantly surprise by the repair cost unless it requires a new CRT. Oh and show me a TV engineer on £90 per hour and I change jobs tomorrow (ex TV and consumer electronics engineer). |

I must admit £90 / hour was a figure just plucked out the air (that's how much plumbers charge on a Sunday here). The last time I took a TV to a repair shop was several years ago and the guy charged me £60 to resolder a couple of dry joints - circa 10 minutes work...

Sometimes of course it can take several hours to actually find those dry joints!... resoldering them is the easy bit...
of course sometimes it does only take 5 minutes to find the dry joint, repair it and still charge £60 Anyhow, I too, doubt that you'll fix this fault in the service menu... sounds more like a component failure..... is it the same if you turn the contrast and brightness down to about 50% ? |

yes - just as bad at 50% and now it's started sort of flickering like macrovision protected stuff does when you record it although this reduces the longer it's left on
doesn't look good....only 2 1/2 years old too |

Sound's like a premature end for the tube.
