O2 and Carphone Warehouse

Rang up O2 the other day for my PAC code, as I was planning on leaving them and go to a different retailer as O2 didnt have the phone I wanted. After about 10 minutes of the lady trying to convince me to have a different phone to the one I wanted, she told me that I could upgrade in a Carphone Warehouse store if they had the phone I wanted.

Thought that was a bit of a stalling tactic, but decided to give it a try and lo and behold, they had the phone I wanted and managed to upgrade and keep my number, although I changed my tariff.

Is this normal practice?

Also, another question. They gave me a 3G sim which the chap said to put into my phone if my current sim card dies within the next 48 hours. Not too keen on doing this, as I won't be using 3G and if anything goes wrong with my phone and have to send it back, I cant put the sim card in another phone without 3G. Can I ring up O2 and tell them not to activate the 3G sim?

You can put a 3g sim in a non 3g phone, it just means you wont have the 3g. I would upgrade to 3g anyway.

Oh I'm sure I was told in the past I couldnt do that. No point in me really having 3G to be honest as I wouldnt use it and dont know anyone else with a 3G phone.

3G is not just for two-way video - it is also used for faster sending of packet data (media messages, internet, e-mail). It is standard for you to get given a 3G card with a 3G phone - don't worry, the card is paired with your number. Make sure all your contacts are copied onto the phone though (in case they are on the "old" sim card).

On the upgrade front, I waited for months to get an i8510 (Innov8) on o2 and finally just went into CPW. Same phone, same contract, same number, same bill - just different handset provider. I also got it for free... I am sure I would have been charged by o2.

Thats what the chap said. I told him I'd been having problems upgrading as I was an old sim only tariff, even though I'd been allowed upgrades in the past. He said that a lot of people had been going into CPW lately and upgrading because O2 had been charging ridiculous amounts for a phone. Its handy tho cos CPW have a wider range of phones than in the O2 store and online.

CPW often pays a lot of money to have phones exclusively for a few months... like the Innov8 - not sure if it available yet from any airtime providers.
