No I think there have been better Waltzes Alesha's is a prime example and I thought Lisa's was good if simple.

QUICKSTEP - Lisa Snowdon (40) - I liked it (not sure where the gapping was in the 40 one as mentioned there was plenty in the original) Some have said it was slow bit I'm no expert so can't comment.

TANGO - Rachel Stevens (39) I wasn't a fan of this and again although I wasn't a fan of her Zoe's was far better.

FOXTROT - Rachel Stevens/Lisa Snowdon (40) I liked both but would have given it to Lisa as the music gave it an extra dimension.

VIENNESE - Alesha Dixon (38) er erm hard one to call I would say this is the best example. You had Lisa who had that combination of dress/music/dance but perhaps not the best performance. You had Rachel who did a nice one but her dress put me off - I think performance plays a BIG part in this dance.

SMOOTH - Gethin Jones (38) Again can't remember many of these would have said Kelly but we all know why she can't be. I was disappointed in Austin's so would say about right.

CHA CHA - Lisa Snowdon (40) I liked it as I'm not a big Cha cha fan. Alesha's was too hectic for me. Jills was good though.

RUMBA - Rachel Stevens (39) can't say I have an opinion on this the Rumba is a bit meh for me.

JIVE - Jill Halfpenny (40) - Yeah not a lot of contest is there but a nod for Austin.

PASO DOBLE - Austin Healey (38) - NO! It was ok but it wasn't great Natasha's way back was good as was Colin's and a nod for Dazzler.

SAMBA - Zoe Ball (38) Yeah but as has been said never had much competition.

SALSA - Mark Ramprakash (40) again not a lot of competition and I was never a fan but would give them this

SALSA - Mark Ramprakash (40) - I prefer Matt DA's shimmying salsa but there's no denying Mark's was fab as well. I think Mark & Matt should share this record .

ARGENTINE - Mark Ramprakash/Rachel Stevens (39) - I think Mark's AT just tops it for me but I liked Rachel's as well and I think she had harder choreography to deal with.

You've got me going now. Vincent in the Showdance looked desperate when Rachel nearly slipped out of his hands. Macho Brendan took on Lisa who was his own size, his hubris nearly ending with both of them on the floor in a heap.

Canny Ian understood discretion was the better part of valour and did not lift either 6 foot 3 Penny or 6 foot 2 Jodie skywards to the ceiling.

It is certainly the only one that lots of people are finding it hard to picture... even Matt DA's Waltz is easier for people to remember and most people agree that didn't deserve 40! You would think the (supposed) very best version of a dance performed on the show would be memorable at least!

No. Very competent and nicely executed but I am convinced the mark was only this high because of the sympathy vote which sticks in my craw. A deserved high scorer but shouldn't hold the record.

QUICKSTEP - Lisa Snowdon (40) - Left me completely cold, I'm afraid. If I had to go for a more deserving one, I would say Colin Jackson's. And I loved Matt di Angelo's, stumble or no stumble.

TANGO - Rachel Stevens (39) Zoe Ball's was far more memorable for me, so I would say a more deserving record holder, although I suspect Rachel's was technically more proficient.

FOXTROT - Rachel Stevens/Lisa Snowdon (40) Here I have a problem because I think there is a divergence between the best dance technically (Rachel's, and a very good job she did of it too) and artistically (for me, Tom's which really caught the spirit of the foxtrot as a social dance). On the basis that Strictly is *theoretically* judged as much a competition rather than critiqued as a performance, then Rachel probably deserves the record. Lisa's didn't register with me at all.

VIENNESE - Alesha Dixon (38) Yes, absolutely. An exquisite dance, beautifully executed. Matthew's choreography had a huge amount to do with this. I still get shivers up my spine at the tempo change each time I watch it.

SMOOTH - Gethin Jones (38) Fair enough. I can't say any of the smooths really registered with me.

CHA CHA - Lisa Snowdon (40) No, absolutely not. The first one was horribly lumpy and hunched. She did get better but never to a 40, record-holding standard.

RUMBA - Rachel Stevens (39) Mmm. Not sure. Part of this could just be rumba fatigue as we saw it so many times. I would go with Colin Jackson's personally. And having seen Cherie's on tour, I would add that to the running as well.

JIVE - Jill Halfpenny (40) - Yes, no contest, although both Louisa Lytton's and Austin Healey's were great fun to watch.

PASO DOBLE - Austin Healey (38) - I don't think there have been any really good pasos on Strictly. This one was certainly memorable, although whether that should make it record-holding is a moot point.

SAMBA - Zoe Ball (38) Similar reservations to the paso, although this probably does deserve the record.

SALSA - Mark Ramprakash (40) Yes. As with Jill's jive, there are just some dances that the celebs have made their own and deserve to hold the record on.

I think whoever mentioned the difference between technical excellence and emotional power had it right. Personally Rachel just edges it for me because the choreography (and her ability to handle it) was so extraordinary.

Well said BuddyB, I quite agree. The latter half of series 6 was littered with undeserved maximums and unwarranted eulogies to mediocre performances.

I agree comparing series against series isn't really that relevant, but unfortunately that's what Tess does every series. No doubt she will continue to do this and it makes me want to see some of the 6 records from Series 6 bettered as soon as possible - but of course that isn't even possible when we are talking about a record where the score is already 40.

Here's hoping for a new scoring system that will wipe the slate clean.


Actually before I posted my answers I watched Gethin's AS on YT as I couldn't remember either - I could remember every other dance holding a record.

Just because a dance has the highest points doesn't mean it is the very best. It is just what the judges gave them. However, I still think Gethin's AS was great. I cannot remember half of the others and had to remind myself.

Thank you Gill for a chance to watch it again. Seems such a long time ago now, that surge from Gethin and Camilla, the happiest i have ever seen her. At that stage Gethin outpolled Alesha in the audience vote and briefly became the bookies favourite. There is an innocent engaging charm about those two.

Camilla is of course thin and lightweight, but those long limbs of hers raised a little matter of the centre of gravity, like lifting a ladder. Then she stretched her arms and pointed one leg like an aeroplane tailfin.

There was a joy and sparkle in Camilla she did not show with Tom the Chin. Watching Gethin and Camilla the audience wanted them to do well. Those were the days.

I do agree with that, it's kind of the point of this thread I think! But I think it's interesting that quite a few people have picked that one in particular as the one they can't remember. As someone else said, that in itself does say something about its long term impact.

Quite obviously though it is all subjective!

Adding Andrew and Ola to the dodgy lift folder, though - yes - I see your point that even the pros mess them up. On the Penny front though, I'm not sure they had a chance to do a dance with a lift. I think that's right? Which was a shame.

My main problem with the lift is the way it is built up before the show, and also because sometimes I feel like a whole dance is choreographed just around a lift. Like the lift will save it from mediocrity, and everyone will "ooh" and "ahh" and forget the steps (the true dance, damn it!) in between.

Which is perhaps why I liked Kelly's AS because they were seemless and not ridiculous. And also Rachel's in the first AS, the way three were linked into one (and come to think of it, in her second AS, that simple lift holding by her hands in the air was understated but beautiful).

But why Cherie's AS lift was for me silly. Like Jesus on the cross dressed as a Southern Belle. This is probably the ice-dancing name for it!

The public having been tipped off about the rule of two compusory lifts did focus on that aspect of AS. Have to say Kristina did choreograph the most ingenious and labour-saving lifts, and John carried them off admirably. They blended in with the mood and music, unlike Andrew who seemed to say to himself, "One, Two, Three, LIFT".

Kelly had so much music and flavour about her that just to move naturally made a pleasing spectacle. Cannot remember if Fred Astaire did many lifts, maybe cannot remember because his lifts looked so natural as to seem effortless.

I believe there could be a subtext in the requirement of two lifts. Despite all the PC talk of gender equality the public want to see the man has strength in a crisis (not just a ponce specialising in mincing steps). And at no extra cost the act fulfills its second purpose -- showing off a woman's femininity and suppleness. When it is imaginatively done I find it an asset. Kenny certainly suspended dancing when he switched to his circus act of one-handed lift. But he also suspended dancing when he impersonated a statue in the rumba.

Play nice now.

My favourite lift is the one where the man is holding the woman flat on his arms and they spin - sometimes moving up and down - and the woman's dress flares out looking so elegant. The best one is Alesha & Matt short victory dance at the end of the final - magic! Matt Di and Flavia doing the AS in the final when she is wearing culottes is just stunning. The other one that I loved was the lift at the end of Karen & Mark's VW - fabulous!

It's a problem with lifts generally isn't it? A lot of showdances end up being entirely about the lifts which is why the best ones i.e Zoe/Ian, Alesha/Matt and Tom/Cam are ones where either the lady is too tall to be lifted easily or there was a will with both pros to do something a bit more inventive. This is why it's a good thing they're mostly banned and restricted to two in AS (although that said I can sort of understand Bruno because Brendan and Kelly's AS was fantastic - although it didn't need the first lift and had Brendan not been a prat it would have easily and deservedly been the highest scoring AS ever - such a shame).
