Now Alex Burke has clinched the number one spot, is it correct that she changed her name from Alex Bell???? her Mother being Melissa Bell with many recording industry contacts as a Music Consultant.

Alex Burke-Bell was a backing singer with Soul Explosion, a group whose lead vocals from her mother Melissa Bell?

Melissa Bell (singer)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia

Melissa Bell was the lead singer of Grammy winning R&B act Soul II Soul. She is the mother of winner of the fifth series of UK television talent show The X Factor, Alexandra Burke. Bell now works as a music consultant and runs her own business. She is close friends with Beverley Knight and Stevie Wonder.

The producers really didn't want us to hear about this side of Alexandra's life. We got (as usual) the sob story - not the full picture.

I expect nothing less of this type of show

Alex's story was the least sob of all the contestants

Yes her father's name may be Burke, but her singing with an established chart name group?? - I think that was news worthy during the contest and should have been revealed, it is now claimed Louis kept in touch with her over the past three years and helped her, but did she need it?

I'd love proof of this I would.

Alex hardly had a sob story!
Her mother wasnt the main Soul II Soul singer, just a session singer AFAIK and certainly not the lead when they had all their big hits.

She was the lead singer on three of their albums and toured the world with the band.

What's the problem with her changing her surname.
Last week there was a video on youtube posted of her singing at a gig thing before the X Factor where she introduced herself as Alexandra Bell though so she likely did change it for the show

Alex's mum has said just because she was in a grammy award winning group doesn't mean she's rich or that well known. Why should alex change her name from burke to bell? People now know her as alexandra burke so, in my opinion, it'd be a dumb decision to change her name now.

I think what someone is saying is she was performing as Alexandra Bell before X-Factor so appears to have reverted back to Burke for the show.

It doesn't matter though does it?

Alex clearly has an extensive back story but it's all been in the press - including her writing and recording a duet with her friend Joss Stone.

I don't think it's any worse than Ray Quinn who had previously appeared as a lead character in a nationally broadcast British soap for three years.

Some people already had connetions and deals before, Carly whatver her name that was in American Idol this had had a deal before. Leona had been in America before and worked with producers before and made a few unreleased albums- I guess that means she's had a deal before

I knew weeks ago about her singing as a backing singer. It was on the band's website I think, along with a picture of Alex and another girl.

I suppose it depends on whether you've accessed this information from a website promoting Melissa Bell or not. If you go to a Soul II Soul website Caron Wheeler is their definitive and most famous lead singer and the one most associated with their biggest hits.

I'm not disputing that she did do lead vocals, plus I know she has writing credits for the band as well. However, she wasn't lead vocalist at the height of their fame.

Just found the link to Soul Explosion's website. This is the page with a pic of Alex on it at the bottom.

Soul Explosion are hardly a top act. I wonder if they even have a record deal. Probably just go around gigging and stuff.

I think Soul 2 soul had session singers, so I think over their time together they had several different female singers, but the main force behind them was Jazzy B. Alex's mother was not with them during the days of Back to life and keep on moving.

Yep, as far as I can tell they're just a covers band who do weddings etc.

Loads of musicians play in such bands, it's not really a big deal and is completely different to something like the X Factor.

well if you notice on that link her sister is listed as sheniece burke so obviously burke is a family name also so i don't really see what relevance this has at all?

It doesn't bother me that Alex may have sung in a band. I see it as them doing the thing they love, trying to get a living, hoping one day to hit the big time. You can't sit at home doing nothing and waiting for that knock on the door by fame or opportunity, you have to go out and work at it.

I know - I was a bit of a fan of Ms. Wheeler and her cohorts "back in the day". Clearly the height of their success was the first two albums but that doesn't diminish the fact that Melissa Bell took over from her in the group - to describe her as just a "session singer" in Soul II Soul is incredibly insulting given her contribution.

She was also a very well respected backing vocalist for some of the biggest stars in the world - hence Alex's famous godfather.

Having looked at the website for Soul Explosion I doubt that they were even hoping to hit the big time.

Seems to me just a band put together from various musicians specifically targeted at doing things like weddings/corporate events.

I know quite a few musicians myself who've been involved in these sort of bands - they never pretend it's anything other than just a way of making some extra cash while pursuing other more serious musical projects.

Is that true? Diana didn't have one did she? Nor eggnogg, nor JLS? (or are you being ironic?)
