Was just wondering how much money someone like Jona Lewie would make from that one song?!

I know Hugh Grant's character in About a Boy lives off just one song - would this really be possible?

Are we talking a few hundred pounds a year? Several thousand? More?!

I remember seeing Noddy Holder on telly saying to someone 'You wouldn't believe how much I make from Merry Xmas Everybody.'

So I reckon it's a lot.

Lemmy says he lives off a couple of Ozzy Osbourne songs.

Our local radio DJ worked with Noddy Holder years and years ago and he was saying the other day that Holder used to recieve a large cheque in June each year from the previous Christmases output.

I would imagine Lewie would make a bit less as it's not all over the place, but it would still be a tidy sum.

If those random outdoor orchestras that spring up in town centres in December have to pay Jona Lewie royalties, he must be coining it in, as inevitably Stop The Cavalry WILL be played by them at some point

They'd make a fortune since they get payed for every play or licensed agreement...

Sting makes $2000 a day in royalties for 'Every Breath You Take'. If I had to guess, I'd say that Jona Lewie makes about £10-15,000 a year in royalties for 'Stop the Cavalry'. Noddy Holder probably makes about 2 or 3 times that, the royalties for 'Merry Xmas Everybody' are split in two with co-writer Jim Lea.

It would be nice to think that Lewie made far more off "You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties", as that is actually a good song, but alas.

Nick Lowe made a fortune after his song '(What's so funny 'bout) Peace Love & Understanding ' was included on 'The Bodyguard soundtrack which i think is one of the biggest selling soundtracks of all time. ( It was actually sung by Curtis Stigers but Lowe wrote it.)

Jona Lewie was also Terry Dactyl from Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs who had a massive hit with Seaside Shuffle in the early 1970's. Can't see him making too much from that though.

It fluctuates surely? I very much doubt he makes EXACTLY 2000 squids EVERYDAY for that song. Besides, how do you know this? Or are you quite literally Barclays Bank? In which case I apologise.

I was about to mention that one - I'd be amazed to learn just how many people know that Jona Lewie was also Terry Dactyl.

Probably quite a few. Jona Lewie (or John Lewis to give his real name) recorded on Stiff and was on the second Be Stiff tour in 1978 so he was actually quite well known around that time. I still have 3 picture disc albums from that tour by JL, Wreckless Eric and Lene Lovitch who were also on the tour and I think Rachel Sweet and Mickey Jupp too. Aah great days. Wreckless Eric was/is a genius, I met him in Manchester once and still have the poster he signed for me!

Whatever he makes it's worth every penny. Love Stop The Cavalry.

There are a lot of commercial radio stations across the country, I havent counted but I would guess more than 200.
Then you have the BBC stations, Radio and TV stations all who pay royalties. Then theres advert deals, online radio, etc. It does add up.

Well Mr Lewie was featured on Justin Lee Collins "Bring back the Christmas number Ones" and has a pretty nice house in South London,so i imagine hes comfortably off...not rich but ok.
seemed like a nice man too.bit of an eccentric apparently but a down too earth likeable guy.

It would be nice if next year people tried to get 'Stop the Cavalry' to be next year's Christmas number one.
It's probably my favourite Christmas record.

I'm not sure how widely known it is because I think that it often gets overlooked compared to most other Christmas records which aren't quite as good.
A lot of other Christmas songs can get annoying, but I don't get annoyed at all with this one.

Funnily enough in spite of my post above where I said that this song tends to get ignored in favour of other Christmas songs, the song was heavily featured in the Christmas Day Eastenders episodes.

Royalties are collected 4 times a year and deposited in to the song writers account. BBC radio pay £16.50 per minute for playing songs on their radio stations and royalties also have to be paid for TV broadcasts, downloads and if used on music CD compilations. Royalties should also be paid if the song is played in a public place such as a pub or nightclub and in work places.
