I assume he means his credit gets eaten up with incoming calls as well as outgoing calls. Are you on pay as go? or contract (O2 sim)?

nothing to do with sim lock since the phone is clearly registering with the network when started otherwise you wouldn't be able to make or receive calls.

This could be a security feature employed by Vodafone. Primarily to protect the handset if stolen, but also to prevent folks doing what you intend to do, i.e. use another network's sim in it. It's possible that they will charge to 'release' the handset, but worth paying the £10 to your local high street phone shop first, they will probably have some experience over network lockouts.

@rotara, Vodafone don't charge for unlocking codes

@tom1962, can you explain what you mean by "knocks of the same" or "it knocks of the call" or "its knocking itself of"? Do you mean that when you make a call or receive a call, the phone rings but then hangs up?

Maybe your 02 sim is a UK one and because your using it in ireland thats the problem i know when i went to ireland i had to pay to recieve calls aswell as make them and i am on 02 check how much you pay for a text message.

It's not to do with unlocking then. It's sounds like you're having signal issues. I had a similar problem where a virgin sim in one unlocked O2 phone worked great but struggled to get signal in an unlocked orange phone.

(Both definitely unlocked - never locked in the first instance).

Unfortunately I don't know how to solve that problem.

It could be that the phone you think is unlocked is in fact locked.
