I found him a bit out of step when I was watching it as it aired, but I was concentrated on the dancing. Yet I still found him unnecessarily sharp and quite rude, and there weren't any problems at that point. I've since watched it again on iPlayer and you can see the annoyance in his eyes and face, it's not only his off-handedness. Tess ad-libbed, once, and he shot her down in flames. That is not the mark of a professional. He didn't understand what she'd said and he "punished" her for it. I'm reminded of Bruce Forsyth from the 70's.
That joke about Jon Sargeant shows that he's out of step with his audience. Maybe it's his personal opinion and he's entitled to that, but he has an audience as well who just may not appreciate him using Jon Sargeant as his unwilling stooge. And I'm one of those of the opinion that Jon Sargeant was wrong to walk. Maybe Tess wouldn't be as annoying as she is if she wasn't pidgeon-holed as Brucie's obligatory blonde. I've seen one interview with her, albeit very short, and she surprised the hell out of me. Even her voice was different.
Would Strictly be the same without Bruce Forsyth? I don't know. But I don't think that fear of losing what Strictly intrinsically is should be an excuse for any kind of behaviour it's host wants to exhibit. If that's Bruce back on form, I personally don't like it.
