I am due an upgrade on jan 3rd with Three. I have a nokia 6120 paying £15 a month on the texter plan.

What FREE handset do you think I could manage to get on the same plan?

I really want the N95 but I doubt they will give me that for free on that tariff as it's a £250 phone to buy if taking that tariff, so I would be more than happy with the Nokia 6600 Slide. However again the 6600 is £99 on the tariff I want - however this is if you are joining as a new customer...

Just not sure what I can ask for. When you call them to upgrade, do they tell you 2 or 3 phones you can have and it's like it or lump it? How does it work?

You need to be aware of what deals you can get from other operators. All Operators like to retain their customers so are not unfair with what they offer you and may negotiate.

Good Luck.

Ok but do they have a number of options ready to give you? Is there a chance I could get the Nokia 6600 Slide for free on my £15 texter plan when usually to new customers it's £99?

They will offer you a number of options, but I can't be specific as the offers change every month.

You won't have to make a decision there and then - write down the offers they make, and phone them back when you've had time to consider them.

It's a Nokia 6500 Slide and yes, they should offer it to you. Be aware that there is always a trade-off between discount on the monthly price and any new handset.

No, the Nokia 6600 Slide, not the 6500.

The 6600 is £99 on a £15 texter plan to new customers. Do you really think they'd give me that for free?

Do they offer you a few options with much higher price plans? My maximum is £15 for the texter plan per mth. I was going to think about the INQ which is £15 a mth with free internet, but I prefer Nokia's.

I don't really know if I am within my rights to ask for that lol

The N95 is getting on a bit - if you phone and ask for your PAC code and threaten to leave they may give you one.

The Nokia 6220 is essentially the same phone (Smaller and lighter but with no WiFi), they may work with you on a deal.

I had a bit of a nightmare cancelling with 3, I had to say no to all sorts of things they were throwing at me. I'd have stayed, but their coverage is just no good where I go!

"I'd like to cancel, please."
"We can offer you the N95 at £15/mo with free data."
"No, I'd like to cancel, it's a good offer but I can't use your network where I'm travelling."
"How about the Sony Ericsson something-or-other with 600 minutes?"
"No, I really would like to cancel, I'm moving to Vodafone, they're the only network that works where I'm going."
"We can match any deal Vodafone are offering you."
"But you can't match their coverage in Scotland!"
"Changing your mobile network is a hassle, you know. How about a 6220 with unlimited texts?"

They were chucking phones and minutes at me to get me to stay and I'm hardly Mr Big Spender on the mobile front (£15/mo, never went over). You should be able to get something.

Yup. I've upgraded 3 times now with 3, £30/35 per month. I just ask for the phone I want and they said yes. Got the N95 8gb in June. And a cheaper contract. If you don't ask, you don't get. Give it a go.

Isn't this a repeat of a thread from last week? I dare say three more months with a 6120 (someone at work has one, it's a nice phone) won't send you into a gibbering wreck. If you hate it that much, send it up here!

I will try then thanks. I'm just not sure what to go for, the N95 or the 6600 Slide. I really like them both.

I love the 6120, but my missus is on 3 now and hates the phone she has so she wants my 6120 lol

I rang 3 today to see if they will upgrade me 4 days early, they said no! I asked what kind of phones can I expect to be offered, and they told me to look on the 3 website for free handsets for the plan i want!

Does this mean then, that bearing in mind the Nokia 6600 Slide is £99 on the plan I want, that I probably won't end up getting it for free by upgrading?

The best way to do this is to tell them what you want and make it an outrageous request, then negotiate down..

Everytime I have renewed my wife's contract on 3, they have given her the phone she wanted, one time, the phone turned up, used it for a day, decided she didn't like it, phoned 3 and they swapped it for a different phone (they give you 15 days to trial the phone).

The thing I would say is that you need to be prepared to walk away from three (or any other network).

Summing up :-

1. Call them
2. tell them what you want and add a bit more on for luck
3. negotiate down to what you actually wanted
4. if they won't give you what you want, tell them to cancel your contract and mean it (they will then pressure you in to staying both on the phone at the time and then for days afterwards)

Remember, you can tell them to cancel, if you don't actually mean it, you can always phone back a few days later whilst in the notice period and negotiate a new deal with them

Best of British !!

Hi, the problem is I am at the upgrade stage. Were you when you upgraded? If I was out of my contract completly then fair enough, but I am in month 15 of 18. You say 'renewed', but was this at the upgrade period or when approaching the end of the contract?

Did they give the handset to you for free when it was £100? Can you give a bit more detail please? Cheers

Just ring 3!

No matter what options others have been given, the only way to find out is tell them what you want and then accept an alternative if thats your only option with them. Other than that......move on!

Each case is customer specific to usage and length of time as a customer usually.

I understand that, but I'm guessing the upgrade stage is very different from the actual renewal stage.

I want to know if at the upgrade stage, you can pick anything they have online or whether you can possibly get a handset thats chargeable online, for free if you upgrade...

I'm in the 17th month of an 18th month contract and obviously want the N96 though I can't see me getting that as I am only on a £20/m contract. I'm going to wait until inside the last 30 days so I can always hand in the notice to cancel if they mess about.

I do have the added bargaining points of having an internet add-on every month for £5 and I have 3 mobile broadband, so overall I am worth £37.50 a month to 3, so it is up to them how much they want to keep my custom. An N95 8gig is the lowest I am willing to accept.

The only annoying thing is my broadband is half price while I have a phone with them, and the broadband contract runs until November so I'm kind of stuck

Ok basically they will only upgrade me on what they have online at the moment. No retension packages or anything at the 15mth upgrade stage.

I can have either:

Nokia 6500 Slide - mix and match 300 for £17.00 a month
Nokia 6600 Slide - mix and match 300 for £19.53 a month

I'm on the £15 texter plan at the moment so basically I lose quite alot. I get 600 texts and 75mins for £15 now, but if I change phones which I really want the 6600, then I will have either 300 texts or mins - I can use for example, 100mins and 200 texts a mth.

I only text really so I kinda have 300. No idea if this is a bargain or not. Next upgrade will be 18 months from now. What do you think? There is of course the INQ for £15 a month and free handset and internet, but it just looks cheap.

TBH they have got you at the moment , they know you cannot leave as you are only 15 months into the contract

You must decide whether to stay as you are or wait until the 17th month and then request your Pac , they will give you a better deal if you can wait .

Also if you upgrade now @ 15 months , the new , next 18 month contract will start when this current one ends , effectively you will be in an 18 month + 3 month contract .

Unless you are desperate for a phone I would wait , but it is your decision .

My son upgrading @ 15 months purely because his phone was cream crackered and he was using a spare W850i off his Mum ( not much street cred there ) and it was his birthday , he was on the £20 texter plan , paying £20 Pm for ( I think ) 100 mins plus 1000 texts . so an extra £5 got him a £200+ phone free and lots of extra mins and texts

He got a good deal a free W850I ( his phone choice) 750 mins , unlimited texts ( 3000) for £25 ( reduced from £35 .

Yeah I get what you mean. My missus needs a new mobile though as her sucks so she will be having mine that I have now (nokia 6120).

I think I might go for the Nokia 6600. The handset will be free, I will get 300 mix and match minutes and texts all for £19.50 per mth on an 18mth contract. Does that sound worth it? I mainly text and rarely make calls. Just want to make sure i am doing the right thing as I will have this handset for 18mths before I can upgrade again.

£19.50 sounds dear for only 300 mins OR texts and as I say earlier you are adding the 3 months onto your contract so it becomes 21 months before you can leave three .

The phone can be bought for £179 sim free

£19.50 x 21 months = £409.50 over the life of the contract for just 300 mins or texts

You say you text , go for a texter plan ?

A texter £20 plan gets you lots more texts and the phone is only £49 ontop to buy

£20 x 21 = £420 +£49 (handset)= £469 over the life of the contract and you get unlimited texts (3000 pm ) and 200 mins

I think the least I would expect is the £20 Texter plan and a free phone
