I've had the D60 for about a month now and have been impressed with the results, mostly taken on the auto modes, still exploring all the settings. I chose the Nikon over the Canon because to me it felt a better build quality, especially the lens controls.

I'd go with the Canon as it has Auto Focus and is PictBridge compatible, also very slightly better battery. Not much in it though! (Nikon looks better for what thats worth!)

Thanks for posting- so they both have auto modes/focus?!?

Is impossiblr to choose between the 2!!!!!! Am going to be photographing children indoors and landscapes. They're both the same price in Jessops atm and feel similar in store!

Both cameras have Auto Focus and PictBridge support.

I would say the Canon has more for the money - it has a 7-area AF sensor (the Nikon has a pretty restrictive 3-area AF), and LiveView mode so you can view what you're shooting on the screen. The Canon also has a wider range of compatible lenses, unlike the D40/D60 which are restricted to Nikon's AF-S lenses if you want autofocus.

That said, I'm a Nikon fan myself, but I'd certainly be tempted to go for the Canon at that price. Although one plus point about the Nikon is the significantly higher quality kit lens.

Thanks Pingu, my heart says Canon but my head says Nikon (for some reason!?!), I've heard elsewhere that the nikon kit lens is better quality- although both cameras get equal ratings for image quality?!? Man this is the hardest decision I've ever had to make!!

A month ago I was searching for a SLR. I was undecided between nikon, canon and Sony. Eventually I bought Canon 1000D due to the features, wider range of lens and the £30 cashback.

I am happy with it but have a ever so slightly little regret of not buying the D450 but I am happy with my D1000D. It's my first SLR and I been taking pics of family and landscapes. The quality for me is stunning, I just cant believe how much difference it makes. The quality are almost all the same for all the brands - its a matter of technique which will take time to learn. I choose the 1000D cos it felt nice and small in my hands. I dont like chunky slrs.

I also look at photos on flickr.

Considering Nikon have stuck by the F-mount since 1959 I think it's more than a little misleading to suggest the Canon has a wider choice of lens!

Virtually every lens, both manual and auto-focus, Nikon have made since 1959 will work with the D40, check out the Wikipedia entry for the F-mount this will give you some idea of just how many lens are compatible.
