STRICTLY Come Dancing champion Tom Chambers hopes to waltz into a role on Doctor Who.

Bosses of the Beeb time travel drama have become massive fans of the Holby City hoofer and want to offer him a guest spot.

They plan to set up a meeting with Tom, 31, knowing he would bring a massive fan base with him to the show after a record 13million viewers watched his ballroom triumph.

Russell T Davies, who has started filming four Doctor Who specials to air next year, said: “Tom is a great call. He has proved what a great actor he is in Holby City. And now he has proved how popular he is.

“That is the great thing about entertainment shows like Strictly Come Dancing for actors – they show how versatile they are and you know what they can offer.”

Tom is more likely to appear as a villain or a sidekick rather than as the Time Lord himself.

But the role would still be a great boost for the actor, who postponed his honeymoon to appear on Strictly and has only just gone away for a romantic break with bride Clare, 26.

Pals say he is keen to take advantage of any opportunities thrown up by his new celebrity status.

Davies has been keen to cast celeb guests ever since he revived Doctor Who three years ago.

Peter Kay, Kylie Minogue, Felicity Kendall, Zoe Wanamaker, Simon Pegg, Anne Robinson, Davina McCall and even Richard Dawkins have all popped up in the show.

Love to see him in Dr Who. A sexy male side kick would be great for a change. They could do more of the buddie/buddie relationship that works well between Arthur and Merlin in the BBC Merlin series. If the rumour of Pattinson Joseph is true for the Dr then they need a sexy male sidekick to keep women happy as to be blunt Joseph isnt my idea of crumpet. I dont see Tom as a baddie in it to be honest. A sidekick definitely. In Stargate Atlantis they again do the buddie/buddie relationships well. One where the sidekick maybe tries to outshine the dr at times would work.

I can't imagine him in Doctor Who at all.

i think he'd be a perfect Dr Who. He's a good actor, excellent at comedy and is the sort of actor women as well as kids warm too. But a sidekick role would be great too. The guy tipped for the who role is nothgin to write home about.

I think he'd be an excellent Doctor but at least its good to see he'll get some opportunities from the exposure SCD has given hm. I started watching Holby at the end to see him and was surprised at how good he was. A backhanded compliment maybe but still he impressed me.

Tom would suit the Doctor perfectly but I;m sure the BBC will want to have a black actor in the role or a woman. These politically correct times will ensure it wont be another white actor in his 30's. Still Tom as an assistant would do me nicely. Some antagonism between the two would be a new angle.

Who IS the guy tipped for the who role? I'm not yet that up to date.

Tennant's over acting drives me up the wall so Tom cant be as bad as that. Its impossible. I'd rather him as the doctor but yeah a sidekick who isnt the love interest would be good. He could be MY Love interest. I've never fancied a dr who or assistant yet so its about time I had one I could enjoy. The guy tipped for the role was the bloke who the girls in the green wing office fancies. I dont get the appeal. He's just an average actor and has been in the show before when Eccleston was the Doctor.

I have to say the quotes sound more like a sidekick role than just a one off episode. Excited.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a one-off guest role, but I wouldn't like to see him as the Doctor or regular sidekick. I never watch Holby, but I'd never be able to forget some of his 'dancing' faces

He was good in Holby. I hate medical shows but did watch about half a dozen of his episodes and he was really very watchable. He's the sort of actor who gives off a cuddly non threatening feel. Quite quirky and quick witted so he probably suits Dr Who well. Children would love him. I could see him as a sidekick that hates toeing the line to the Doctor. Actually sidekick might be the wrong term. Doctor who needs to get away from the too obvious older guy and younger sidekick. Time they shook it up a bit and gave the doctor some screen competition.

He was very sexy in Holby. Actually thats one thing about him in real life. He never played on his obvious good looks on Strictly. He's a very handsome guy and I could see the ladies lapping him up on Dr Who. He's also the sort of guy that men watching the show would take to. He's non threatening. If he ends up travelling with the doctor I think they should play on his comic ability and maybe occasionally give him so heartbreaking romances. He needs to be unlucky in love. Women would be putty.

He's a good all rounder and ideal for Dr Who. He sells the cheesiest of lines very well.

Tom as Dr Who isn't a very popular choice on the Dr Who forum - I tend to agree, doesn't have enough gravatis. Possibly as a side kick but don't forget theres a series of 'specials' before another full series so it might only be a short time role, still what a fantastic opportunity for him if it happened.

No you're not alone in thinking that. I also think he would make a great Dr.Who.

No one who is chosen to play the Doctor or his sidekick has much 'gravitas' to start off with, that's kinda the whole point. Everyone knows of Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, David Tennant, but where did the majority of their fame spring from? Doctor Who, 'cause they like to bring fairly unknown talent to the screen to stop it becoming monotonous. Look at Torchwood - apart from John Barrowman, the only person I saw in anything other than the show was Burn Gorman and that was a dodgy role in Miss Marple. Tom may be different in the way that he already has an established fanbase from Strictly but he's not all that well known in the acting world and so I think Davies will look at that and find it very appealing.

If Tom makes this role he can finally have the successful acting career he deserves.

I think Chambers would make a good Doctor but he hasnt got the acting credentials the BBC or avid fans would want. They tend to want RADA/theatre trained biggies for the role.

I like the idea of a buddie side kick. I love the Merlin/Arthur relationship. Thats the best part of that series and it would be good for the Doctor to have another guy to bounce off (pun not intended). Even a sidekick who gets the girl occasionally instead of the Doctor. Chambers would fit very well. Depending on how Joseph's Doctor is portrayed maybe Chambers as the more cuddly warm sidekick would be a good balance. I too am sick to death of the girl sidekicks.

He'd make a better Doctor than a sidekick but I do like the Sheppard/Mckay idea from Stargate Atantis a lot. I can see Chambers in that sort of role. Its time for a change in the doctor/assistant relationships. The guy's have had it their way too long with girl assistants.

Maybe have him on board for one special and see how it goes. If it works get him back to rub up against Joseph. I dont fancy Joseph one little bit. Yeah call me shallow but I like fancying the doctor or at least one member of the main cast.
