Allied Carpets have also gone into administration. Saw my local one was shut with 'administration' notices on the door. I hope customers with outstanding orders paid by credit card

The Jessops in Liverpool was shut the other day - they have been in trouble ........

This is awful! Not only has the cost of living increased so has the cost of running a shop. Bills, fuel etc all add up, and if your in an area where there are customers are struggling for money, your automatically in big trouble.

I see Lunn Poly have gone now too.

The government need to act VERY QUICKLY to abolish parking charges, and make a trip to the highstreet as attractive as possible, and try to reduce the cost of fuel. Europe has decreased the cost of its fuel and the euro is now strong against the pound.

Looks like JJB are doing fine (I didn't realise until I was halfway through this was from 2009)

Woolworths still exist - just not shops. They have sweets too. http://www.woolworths.co.uk/e/q/swee...questid=264567

Garden centres are doing great these days, instead of going on holiday Brits are doing the garden. The garden centres with Gift and coffee shops are doing particularly well and Dobbies have opened another branch near me. (Even if they're now owned by Tesco)

Hopefully next to go will be "Go Compare"

I thought Lunn Poly went years ago

Lunn Poly disappeared ages ago, Charcole. I think they merged with Thomson. Tbh the travel agent industry is one of those made near redundant by the Internet commerce revolution. It's often cheaper & easier to book flights & hotels directly yourself, & cut out the travel agent middleman.

Didn't they close down years ago?

I've heard Woolworths have gone out of business

Nope, Allied Carpets must have closed only within the past week or so, I only noticed it today when the big sign & billboards were gone & there were 3 notices on the door saying they had gone into administration, along with contact details of the administrators.

It was still open the last time I visited the retail park a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: Allied Carpets Retail Folds
Quote:
“Allied Carpets Retail folds

16 March 2011

Allied Carpets Retail has gone into administration after selling 24 of its stores to Savana Trading.”

Didn't the officers club go down a couple of years ago and so many shops were saved and the rest closed permanently?

I agree why would you go into a travel agents unless you aren't really very familiar with the internet.
Why ask someone in a shop to look you up a holiday when you can find exactly what you want yourself and probably much cheaper and at a time to suit you?

Depends on the holiday. We went on a posh tour across Canada with guides etc. Thomas Cooked it for the service and total complicated package. But our usual 3 weeks camping in Provence we book the ferry and make the rest up as we go along when we get off at Calais.

HMV might be no more by dec

On the news they mentioned argos, and homebase might also be in difficulties, profits to be announced in next few weeks

One year of low profits doesn't mean the whole business will close down.

Remember M&S? They looked not long for this world a few years ago when they made a loss one year, and look at them now, probably the strongest they have ever been!

adams chidren stores i assume you mean they went under over a year ago.
I cant see currys/pc world going down myself (ie the dixons group). But i can see them cutting down there shops.
dixons diod this with the dixons shops a few years back and converted some of them to phone shops. Have a feeling this arm of dixons will close most of there shops, when the leases are up. currys already operate as a seperate arm anyway ,eventhough they see to sell the same items as pc world.
So there is likely to be some form of makeing them operate as a single identity. This again means a number of shops will be closed . Think they should get through this nasty patch ,as it appears there bank has decided not to support the company
