I wouldn't be surprised if JJB go next. They have closed 3 out of 5 of our nearest stores. We virtually kept them in business when our kids were younger single handedly!

I have a £5 voucher to use, must use it soon then!

JJB's problem is that these brand's (such as Adidas, Nike, Gola etc) that were cool in the 90's are very uncool today and have became assocaited with Chavs and as such most people wouldn't be seen dead wearing them - meaning they're screwed really. Unless they change their focus to sport equipment and trainers.

How would it have been different under the Tories then?

Boom and bust is a natural thing and cant be avoided.

Is that a business term then?

Burberry reinvented themselves and they were associated with Chav culture.

Are JJB looking at having problems then. What would happen with their gyms they had better not shut down as its the only gym I have ever liked.

I think we would be in big trouble if companies like WH Smith went. They are everywhere surely they would be ok because of the post office contracts etc and if M& S went we would be in huge trouble (how many people do they employ in this country). I think they are in an ok state though aren't they.

Debenhams is having problems , my oh works there PT and there are rumours abounds about massive store closures and lay offs,

M & S are fine, i work for them and i don't forsee us going under anytime soon.

Probably somewhere like Mobens or dolphin or somewhere. No one can afford new kitchens or bathrooms and i know when i looked a few years back they were really expensive.

Bllody hell 'Adams' also. I never use the shop much but it is scary out there at the moment, with the knock on effect that one place can cause many others to tumble.

nothing much left in the Pier...signs advertsing shop fixtures and fittings for sale too.

Looking at that list, it is rather large, but it's easy to see why they have gone bust. They either sell items which can be found much cheaper elsewhere, are a bit too niche for times where not much money is going into the market, or are just a bit pap.

Will a store be next? Or will it be a local authority?

Oxford appears to be in dire straights at the moment. When NCP are cutting the cost of parking throughout the UK to help stimulate the retail economy (Source: www.ncp.co.uk/VAT ), Oxford City Council are increasing the cost of parking by 8% - and they admit it is because they are trying to "balance the books".

With a severe drop in retail property rental income, reductions in the number of visitors to city centres as well as the money lost in Iceland - I can there are problems in city halls throughout the country.

Does anyone know if Administrators have ever been called in to take over a council?

Yet more bad news.

How likely is it new stores will take over these empty stores once the recession is over?

Yes, that's the tragic face of these closures, something that a number should bear in mind when they seem happy that a certain chain that they hated closes.

Motorworld closed 95 of it's stores (including the one which I worked in) back in September and Rosebys went into administration and closed most of their stores in September too.

I don't believe DFS will - as much as it seems shops to do with the home are going down the pan, DFS has kept itself up to date and on the ball with it's advertising and continually reinvents itself (albeit in an irritating fashion).

I do think something like SCS or whatever it's called will (the one that Martin Kemp used to advertise).

Our town centre has a lot of empty shop units but that is not down to the recession. The company that owns our shopping centre charge massive rents and the council charge high rates.

I can't believe Debs is in trouble it always seems fairly busy when I'm shopping there.

I thought that might be the case a couple of days ago. I was only saying the other day to my better half that Debenhams are never on the ball with their products. They tend to give discounts such as 20, 30 % off etc but you only find out when you have the pleasant surprise at the till. I don't think I've ever paid the full price for anything I've picked up in Debenhams. Maybe if they turned things the other way and actually made the price discounts clearer they could ride it out. It's common sense really.

This is where it gets silly.

You have massive rents and closures just bring them down and it might slow things down a little.

I have heard of shopping malls refusing tenants so no wonder the streets are empty.
