The next tranch of flops will occur at end March 2009.

That is when the next quarterly rent is due for many of them.

And, by then, the recession will be biting all the harder.

Does anybody remember

What Everyone Wants
Power House
Kwik Save
MVC

they are all long gone. Plus a few of those cheap home ware shops in the 1990's they were all victim to changing times. I remember when sports shops ruled the high street but these days phone shops do.

Eh? Am I seeing things? Perhaps they were on the brink and someone bought them out? Did you notice how the website is still plugging 'Autumn Fashions' though?

puzzling...

i am sure if it was closing that it would have made at least the local news there, but no mention in the Billericay Weekly News website of their local branch of Mackays closing

I know GAP and Mothercare suffered huge losses a long time ago (later 90s/early 00s) when the credit crunch wasn't even in the figment of the biggest cynic's imagination and they closed down a hell of a lot of stores to cut costs

I remember those shops used to be up by where I live but they have now become Comet, Pets at Home and Somerfield respectively.

I reckon WH Smith will next to go down the tubes. The store in my town, according to someone who works there, is losing £12000 a day. Shame really, it's a good shop.

I think WHSmiths will survive mainly thanks to the post offices that are now in the vast majority of town centre ones.
They got their stock from woollies as well as Zavvi but I'm pretty sure that smiths is in a much better position credit wise for finding new wholesalers.
They'll pick up trade from zavvi and woollworths I would think as far as the few remianing cd/dvd markets are concerned.

Yep in the 90s before the whole chav thing there used to be JJB, JD, Footlocker, Allsports, Sports Division, Lilywhites..

Sports Division were taken over by JJBs which has now resulted in them having too many stores and closing them down, Leeds ended up with 3 stores, they've now got 1.

In the sports sector you've basically got JD Sports as the cool place for teenagers to get your Nike Airs, Sports World/Soccer Sports (the Aldi of sports) for your chavs to get £5 Reebok Classics and JJB Sports sitting in the middle not picking up much of anything

I remember those shops had hundreds of different foreign club and football shirts and cheap trainers. That was an era everybody in the town use to walk about in these sports shop gear.

Now there's only really JD, JJB which has closed many shops and Sports World the rest are gone. The last big stores in recent years to close have been What Everyone wants and Littlewoods/Index shops.

I'm only a part time retail assistant but believe me the amount of times I've been asked if JJB is closing - or worse people assuming that we have already entered administration. Its very annoying. JJB will not close anytime soon despite trading conditions. We are still trading well, and as an example my store is over £20,000 up on target this week.
If that is the case, JJB are not doing themselves any favours by having big posters in their "windowlened" windows saying "95% off" and "everything must go". And its not just in one or two of them. Its in all of them in my area.

It does sort of give the impression that not all is well.

and i wonder what their position is with their insurers on their stock, as it was withdrawn a month or couple of months back and it does not help the fact that their shop floor staff are predominatly teenagers who have no experience of customer service.

I would be shocked if WHSmiths went under, i like them, if they did though the profit making parts of the businesses would be the mixed post office branches and their train and airport operations etc.

Never heard of Card Warehouse, but as previously mentioned Gap are a massive multi-national and seem to have stores all over the place (here in London at least).

Mothercare seem to be doing quite well, working in retail myself I've heard that they're one of the few companies recruting in their head office at the moment.

Why arent we seeing football clubs in trouble?

Surely some of them must have very dire finances!

Dont forget a GAME shop. You should of seen the one in Fareham yesterday, it was heaving! Busiest shop in the centre.

Most of them are. Which is why you seem some going into administration. Leeds United were a fairly good team back in the day, then they went belly up.
