I didn't realise Fads were still going - I thought they'd got swallowed up by one of Focus/Homebase or B&Q.

JML - I know they're not a high street name, but I can't imagine they're incredibly profitable.

I understand they're doing quite well with their international franchises.

Also, don't forget that they're part of Arcadia, so they're currently in safe hands, although there have been rumours over the last few years about Philip Green trying to sell it off, this won't happen in the current climate.

they are all long gone. Plus a few of those cheap home ware shops in the 1990's they were all victim to changing times. I remember when sports shops ruled the high street but these days phone shops do.”

I worked for them as they were going under. I remember one of the suppliers came to repossess all the cables we had in store and the Area Manager saying not to worry it was temporary cash flow problem. Two days later the store closed!

Good old DSG took me back with in days.

who is next?”

Don't think I've heard of the bottom five. Are they national?

Wouldn't be surprised to see several of the sportswear retailers to go there are just too many of these all with the same product. Suspect that the supermarkets will pick up some of this merchandise too.

In a similar vein The bottom and lower middle end of womens fashion is probably over populated. There is little diversity and as imports get more expensive people wont put up with the low quality at increasing prices. Some people have already said Next. Personally i think it will go retail park/'shopping destination' only (the high st. shops seem to have had different stock in them for ages now anyway). But I can't see all of Next, New Look, Top Shop, Peacocks, Bon Marche, Primark, and DottyPs (there must be others that i cant remember off the top of my head now too) all surviving - Not to mention the likes of BHS, and Debenhams.

The real sting might come when a couple more suppliers go out of business and shops are left with the debts and no stock to service it.

Up until recently I'd have said HMV would be next but they seem to be picking themselves up a bit now, i know they are part of waterstones which is likely to post a big loss but i think they should pull through.

I would say thefurniture companies could be next eg. SCS, DFS, Bensons for Beds, (the light one is it called Light's Fantastic?), Allied Carpets - I never see anyone in those stores at the best of times.......

Which is what they plan to do - 77 currys.digital store being closed over the next 5 years.

The parent company reported a quarter of a billion pound loss in 2008 compared to a quarter of a billion profit in 2006.

Doesn't matter how big you are, with lossess like that you can't last long.

I think i remember hearing on the radio the other day that HMV had actually increased their profits. Which doesn't surprise me too much, they are often competitive price wise with online retailers a lot of the time.
I guess that the whole 2nd hand games thing is probably helping them a lot too because the margins on that are huge compared to new games where the copyright holders, distributors etc. have to get a cut too!

Snap. The window was covered in sale paper and there was sale signs round the store but I couldn't see any sign of sale at those prices. It didn't help that the staff seemed more interested in gathering around and discussing the virtues of something they had bought cheaper on an auction site...

You know how badly or good a shop is doing by the shareprices. Apparently Boots is in trouble, not sure if this is true or not.

It wouldn't surprise me. I never shop there when other shops are selling the same goods at a cheaper price. I've never been a fan of the Number 7 range either

I think Boots will be ok. They are a massive drug producing company as well as a chemist shop.

Only positive thing about Boots is the loyalty card.

Mothercare are in trouble, I read it online, then noticed some local stores had the "closing down" sign in their windows. my hubby reckons places like Thomas Cook will go under as people won't be able to afford many holidays.

It would take some doing for them to go given their past financial postings.

The only ones that are dropping are those that were not in good shape before the cow farted into the fan. Most of these threads on here and other forums just seem to be people just picking any old high street name out of thin air or picking shops they don't like, or just appear empty when they pass them!

I agree that this gives the impression that we are closing. Infact I dislike the current posters personally ... the've caused nothing but annoyance. This marketing is nationwide.. however they do not state that JJB is closing, and the posters inside shops, and on JJB Radio state that "All 08 Season Stock Must Go", selected lines and subject to availablity.

One nearest to me has massive closing down posters, and maybe it is the case, after all there is two of them in town!
