yes lets wish so many businesses closed down and people out of work and then out of a home as they cannot pay their rent or mortgage . Surely better to try and deal with the countries where the workers are paid so little to make clothes than just shut down shops isn't it ?

bib - well, in our city Primark are now in the premises that were once BHS.

Somebody posted something about Woolworths being replaced in the marketplace by pound shops - I personally don't think they are comparable; I would say that Wilko's is their equivalent, along with shops like Poundstretcher, Home Bargains and other cheap (but not specifically £1) shops.

£1 shops are limited by the £1 structure, so you won't find furniture or a cheap stereo in them - which you will in Wilko's and other cheap shops.

On a personal note, I so wish that Bath would get off their snooty high horse (they wouldn't allow Woolworths into the main part of the city) and let us have a Wilko *sigh*.

That is true of the majority of stores selling clothes including supermarkets. Should they all go out of business as well or is it better to address the problem at source rather than wishing unemployment on perfectly innocent employees?

I was surprised to notice that our Poundshop (which was formerly Woolworths) had a few times for over £1 the other week, special offers of big packs of washing powder etc IIRC. still only about £6 though

They can and do sell items over £1 but was it them or another pound shop were told they could not advertise that all items were £1 any more as it was not the case.

Poundshop/Poundland doesn't actually mean that everything is a pound though, it just refers to the fact that pounds are spent in there..

I suppose we're all different; but as a 33 year old male my shopping habits are now:

Grocery - Sainsburys/Aldi

Household/garden stuff - Argos/B&M/B&Q

Cheap clothes - Sports Direct/Matalan

Decent clothes - M&S/Debenhams

Everything else - Amazon

Never mind the moral high ground bollocks, they are probably in 1 of the countries that we give foreign aid to / outsourcing British jobs to. The last thing I would want is for any worker in the UK to be made redundant or unemployed.

As fir outsourcing it is time to bring the jobs back home to the UK.

The issue with pound shops is it is a fixed price but the value of a pound varies. The value of the pound right now is at it's 30 year low so they won't be purchasing much stock at the moment. A large amount of what Pound shop chains like poundland and pound world / Bargin Buys sell are their own products or bankrupt/end of line stock.

I don't think Bath are being on a high horse, the problem is if they let one retailer have a large sign they have to let others and before your know it they will all have banners and large signs. It could be a listed building.

The council can specify the type and size of the sign.. In York, McDonalds are in a listed building and they were not allowed to change the facade and could only put up a tiny unobtrusive sign. It can be done!

For some places it has nothing to do with the signage, and more to do with not "lowering the tone".

In a place i lived a few years ago the locals were on the street with placards at the idea that a poundshop would open on their high street, meanwhile across the street a Gun shop opened without a second glance.
I must add though, that the same locals would often travel 20 miles to the nearest poundshop to buy branded things for the right price (they put the goods into M&S bags of course) they just didnt want it in their back yard.

not with Brexit, there is too much uncertainly in the market, for anyone to try and turn around something like BHS.

that is more to do with Sainsburys (who own half of Nettos UK operation) focusing on Argos instead.

Not true about Woolworths in Bath. I come from Bath originally, and right up until the early 1990s Woolworths had a branch in the city centre. If I recall correctly, it was in what is now the 'extended' part of M&S. M&S was only about half the size at the time.

Our local branch, Walthamstow, is in the middle of a closing down sale. Guess there must only be weeks at most left.

seems to be taking them a while, either they have not been heavy discounting, they have ALOT of stock, or no one actually wants the stock.

so hard for me to judge based on Peterborough BHS, as it still has the Arcadia brands in it as well, so I would guess they cant heavily discount those. Guessing they cant discount the Happy Shopper stuff either.

For the first couple of weeks the discounts were quite minimal. I have noticed more posters up in the windows this morning with bigger discounts, ranging from 50 - 70% off. I did have a look round at the house sections, because as much as their clothing and "food hall" were not my thing, the house section occasionally came up trumps with some stylish items at way more affordable prices than Heals, Habitat, or John Lewis etc. However, there wasn't really much - a lot of it was a bit too garish for my liking.

There seemed to be an awful lot of quite chintzy bedding and cushions - kind of Cath Kidston on the cheap. I can't stand that faux-chintzy 50s style.

I'd imagine in the last few days the discounts will be much bigger with "everything must go" right down to the shop fittings like Woolworths did.

Probably with BHS they'll be shutting the stores down as the rental period finishes on the less profitable ones and also will probably try and eek out till Christmas as they'll probably have started to receive the winter stock.

Probably the reduced stuff will mainly just be end of season stuff that they'd have to reduce to clear anyway.

The administrators will be trying to wait till the very last moment to reduce stuff and thus we have that waiting game of people wanting a bargain and them trying to get full price for the creditors (and themselves).

The food stuff can naturally run itself out as it goes out of date and just not be replaced and theres a big market for large quantities of near date etc food with the pound shops probably sniffing around.

really? not sure that keeping open until the rent runs out, is how it works,

Winter Stock on the other hand is a good point, if that does not get sold in store, what happens to it?

Normally rent is paid every 3 months March,June,Sept and Dec roughly at the end of the month so if you're going to pay for the space you might as well use it, those that are being closed down may be used to offload the less valuable tat thats not shifting in other stores to keep up trailer usage on transport costs along with other things.

The winter stock will probably be moved to certain stores and as they close down it'll be moved to the next one etc, once the administrators get down to where the stocks worth less than paying for the power/wages etc to flog it then it'll probably get auctioned off and be in somewhere like tk-maxx a few weeks later.

Obviously the t&c's of the rental agreement i don't know but it might be that as they've just sold off all their property IIRC so perhaps theres a one year minimum contract on the rent agreement for those just sold off which is why they're not rushing with a fire sale except for those stores they want to get rid of quickly.
